I’ve read that the 2nd gen only works with 4 TPMS sensors, but Techstream is showing the availability for a 5th…

Any one know for sure if a 5th can be programmed in and used? I have a full size spare that is part of my 5-wheel rotations.

I'm thinking either 2008 or 2009 was the last year they put a sensor in the spare. My 2007 has one.

I would say if you have a TPMS Sensor try and program it and see what happens...

That's the issue... I don't yet. The OEM TPMS sensors went with a set of wheels I sold, so as part of prepping for new ones, I'm trying to figure out if I should order 4 or 5.

This is probably the best option to get the REAL answer.

I’ve seen a few people say trucks with 4 sensors will only accept 4 sensor.
And trucks with 5 can have the option to ignore the 5.

I’d like to know the REAL answer. I have never seen anyone follow up with a conformation.

Maybe a tech like @Bishop84 knows is a 5th can be programmed to a truck that only came with 4?

yes, you can program 5. they used to come factory with a tpms in the spare up until 2009. now you just have to add and program it yourself. all 5 of mine work.

Every toyota model shows 5 sensors like this, id code 0000000 basically tells it to ignore it.

I've never had a customer request a 5th sensor, personally I hate TPMS and I wouldnt want my spare to trigger it even though its handy to know.

The problem is programming with techstream only allows for 4 sensors, it won't ask for the 5th. You'd have to attempt to program using an aftermarket tool, most tools you can always select the 5th.

A little off topic, but Can you enter an id code 0000000 for all 5 positions and disable the TPMS altogether?

I feel that this is valid and on topic. I will go outside right now and try this.

I've only heard this from co-workers I've never tried. Supposedly it works. It's a sketchy way to hide a broken tpms sensor for a tech and I havent seen it yet.

Welp, with my 2015 TRD OffRoad, I was only able to program 4 sensors with Techstream.

It would not let me use the same ID, so you can't program all 4 to be 0000000.

So in summary, with Techstream V14, you can only program 4 sensors and they have to be unique alphanumeric values of 7-characters.

For my 5-wheel rotations, I would need to keep track of the IDs associated with each wheel and then at each rotation, update Techstream to remove the sensor ID that has become the spare and replace it with the sensor ID that was the spare. Not too annoying, but good to know.

But if someone has a broken sensor and doesnt want to replace it, 0000000 is the answer.

Yep, that seems to be the case. During the programming, you would just input the 3 remaining functional sensors and then for the non-functional one, just type in `0000000`.

But I know some 2005-2008/09 trucks had 5 sensors.
How would one program 5 for these trucks?
Was the old TechStream Software capable of 5, and at some point an update rendered only the option for 4? Not exactly sure why Toyota felt like 4 was enough.
Trust me, I know people that would want all 5 to work.

I personally, don’t care. My light has been on for years.
I’m just curious for the reasoning?

I found another thread that shows a screenshot confirming my assumption...

If your truck supports 5 TPMS sensors, the ID Registration wizard will let you input 5 sensor IDs.
My 2015 only supports 4, so I can only input 4.

Example of earlier Taco that supports 5 TPMS sensors: See "Total Tires: 5"

Alloy spares used to be common, but it was expensive. LSD and full sized alloy spares were a thing, cost is why they were axed.

There isn't a 5th tpms on tacoma because steel rims use a different sensor.

Prado, 4runner, and GX all have 5th sensors, where tundra and sequoia used to, but stopped.
