Can someone here explain to me how does the TPMS valve unit becomes unusable after I change the old tire for a new one? Are they designed as a one time per tire use? I still have the stock tires on my 07 (don't drive it much) but when the time comes, I will do my own tires. Thanks for the help.

They only become 'unusable' in one of about three or four ways. Either they are defective and fail, or the battery runs out, or they are broken while the tire is being mounted/dismounted.

What's being talked about here, though, is when you switch to different wheels/tires and have new TPMS units in the new wheels, you have to reprogram the TPMS computer to recognize the new sensors. Then when you switch back to the old wheels/tires, you have to reprogram them AGAIN, and so on and so forth.

JKD, I am aware of what is being talked about here. I just momentarily switched the topic since I want to get another set of wheels but do not want to get ripped off for something that the dealer should cover for free or lesser amount of money. Thanks.

I think he answered your question: no matter what, if you change (tire/wheels as for winter tires to summer tires and back) you'll EITHER have no TPMS on one set, or have to pay a re-programming charge (assuming you put unique sensors on the second tire/wheel) or pay for breaking beads and balance to mount the TPMS sensors.

Very few tire dealers have the equipment to do it because there are so many competing TPMS standards. And those that do have it are unlikely to do it cheaply or free since they have to pay for the equipment somehow.

It sucks, but this is what happens when you let your government turn into a nanny state.

    WOW!
The one thing this thread hasn't had (up to now) is a political agenda . .
I'm fastinated! Care to expound on the 'nanny state' idea I thot it was just my nice reps in congress making sure my car has safety stuff that it would no fway have otherwise!

If not for the nanny state would we even have seat belts??

A famous American once said (let me paraphrase):

This all starts with some fundamental principle of personal phiolosophy-- often borrowed from the Judeo-Christian tradition. It might be the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes. Or maybe just the Golden Rule.

What happens next is a statement of self-worth. A declaration that your life has value; you are more than a corporate pawn, below-minimum wage earner, assemby line robot or cannon fodder for a capitalist war.

And if MY life has value, the next step is an act of projection. What about this other person? What about the lady that cleans the toilets after midnight? Does she have food for her children? Does she get health care?? Can she retire some day?

"And if you can reach this point, then you are well on your way to joining our Party"

Of Course, I still can't believe I have a full set of functional, yet worthless TPMS modules!

You have them because some persons were influenced to use the power of governmental edict to enable an entire new industry at the expense of those disenfranchised people.

Just STFU, buy new sensors and have them programed to your vehicle content in knowing you are putting some lady who used to clean toilets (albeit in China) to work assembling them so she can afford medical care and feed her kids.

    Clazzio seat covers,

To Tacoyota: You're not buying that whole "we put a man on the moon" thing are you? I'll explain my theory sometime.

To everyone else, this is my take. I am sure that your insurance is rated based on the safety features of our Tacomas, i.e. the six airbags, antilock brakes and yes, the TPMS. My guess? If they find that you altered your systems your rates could, would, and should rise.

    Just my thoughts.

And what of those putting ARB front/rear bumpers on then? Maybe they should pay MY insurance...

As for the TPMS system we have: it is demonstrably of limited value in making your vehicle any safer. My insurance did like ABS and 6 airbags, but could care less that it had TPMS. I think they know something you don't.

And speaking of ABS: it's really interesting how this system did not need congressional intervention to make it's adoption wide spread. It's worth was self evident and made it much in demand by the motoring public. Completely unlike TPMS.
