Long story short… tpms like came on Friday… filled tires Friday evening to what I thought was 37 ended up being 40… brought my truck into discount tire Saturday and they were to busy to look at it come back today and also said right rear was at 32psi on Saturday…

brought it back today and they said my tpms light came on because I don’t have a tpms in my spare and they can’t reprogram because of that…

I just got a new spare tire on a new rim but that was like two weeks ago, why would it take so long for tpms to come on. Also my right rear was down to 30psi today but nothing was in the tire.

Anyone heard of this before?? The tpms that is.

Factory setting for a TRD OR is 32/29 (can't remember which it front and rear off the top of my head) or at least that's what mine is. The spare tire sensor is optional, they didn't come from the factory with one but the option is there to program one in.

It's easy to set the sensors you your desired pressure.

1: Set the tire pressures to the pressure you want to run.
2: Turn the key on and wait a few secs.
3: Press and hold the TPMS reset button (directly under the steering column at the bottom of the knee bolster) until the TPMS light blinks slowly 3 times.
4: Release the button and leave the key on for 1 min.
    5: Turn key off

Te light will come on when the pressure is aprox 5 psi lower than the set pressure.

You very well may need one in the spare. I think the 2007 models came with 5 sensors.

Interesting I thought it was optional on all models with TPMS, my 14 doesn't have one in the sapre.
Really the only way to tell if a spare is programmed or not is with a scanner that can read TPMS data.

Discount tire scanned them and they show they are working…. Well except the spare because it doesn’t have one in it

You need one in the spare
My 07 would do about the same
I’d reprogram and within about 5-7 days the light would be back on
Sometimes less days but back on again
Changed the sensor and not a problem again

If it blinks when you turn the key on there's a problem with one of the sensors, if it just comes on steady a tire is low.

Yes- I suffered through it for about 3 years
    Drove me nuts
When starting up it would blink and then stay lit
I bought a new sensor and a tpms reprogramming tool and made it go away in about 15 minutes

That is fine and good except the TPMS ECU is expecting to have 5 sensors not just 4. It is missing the TPMS Sensor in the spare. That is why you have the fault.

They used to have TPMS Sensor in the spare tires from the factory. I think they stopped putting them in the spare tires around 2010 or so. My 2012 only has four, none in the spare from the factory.

In order to get the light off you will need to disable the TPMS System or install a sensor in the spare and have it programmed into the TPMS ECU.

Or Techstream where you can see what is programmed into the ECU.

To confirm your suspicions, my 2010 only has 4 as well. Not exactly sure of the year change but I know 2010 is when minor "wiring changes" occurred so my guess is anyone with a late model 2009 or 2010 will only have 4 sensors.

    I remember this - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tpms-5th-sensor.723674/
See post #8, but the whole thing is worth reading. (Not necessarily you Jimmyh, you were part of this discussion) Anyone else curious might find it interesting.

Maybe try ID code 0000000 and see if you can ignore the 5th?
See what happens?, beats buying a sensor if you don’t want or need one.

I think 2008 was the last year they put one in the spare. My 07 has one. I'd just buy 5 new sensors and have discount tire install them. Will cost you just over $100 on Amazon. You can get a 4 pack for $80, then buy a single for $25.

If you're still on factory TPMS sensors you're way overdue. Most last 7-8 years, but the ones in my 2007 were still working in March. Since I was buying new tires I ordered 5 new sensors and had Discount Tire install them when they mounted tires. If you buy sensors from them they are $65 each.

My spare was the one that came with the truck and since it was almost 14 years old they wouldn't touch it. I found a used take off that was only 4 years old from a small independent shop and replaced my spare at the same time.

This is why you have a TPMS Light on. You have to have a sensor in the spare and one in each of the other wheels too. Five Total Sensors.
