Traccontrol or lsd in 4wd?

I recently bought a 2016 sr5 4x4 and I use it both on and off road ( usually sandy trails in FL ). I was told here prior to my purchase that an sr5 4x4 is enough, and a locking rear isn’t necessary unless I plan to get crazy. My question is does lsd or trac control work in 4wd? Is trac control automatically on in 4wd unless I turn it off? And if so will it help prevent me from getting stuck when in 4hi or 4low?? I’ve scoured the internet but can’t find a straight answer. Any info would be much appreciated.

    Welcome!
Nothing will prevent you from getting stuck, there are no guarantees. A locker or LSD is a great tool, if needed.
Another thing to consider, is the other vehicle offerings you may want as buying an OR with the locker-, might also add the options you are wanting. In other words, it may not be much more just to get the OR, when compared to a lower trim model, with a bunch of additional options.

These trucks dont have LSDs. The computer actuates the brakes independently on all four wheels to simulate an LSD. It's much more effective than LSD.

I agree. I really find it dishonest when Toyota advertises an eLSD rear end.

Because its not a "limited slip differential"... the differential ain't limiting the slip, the brakes are. Nissan calls theirs ABLS (active brake limited slip), which is spot on.

Best answer here: see linked threads
My long answer: situationally dependent. It can help, but no guarantees. Ex: snow vs. dirt. (I'm more knowledgeable about the snow part as we get lots of snow and I enjoy offroading in it) I'm sorry, but brakes are not your friend in snow. once that traction is broken you're kind of screwed as wheel spin/slide smooths it out making it very difficult to move. Once you slide in snow, you're kind of at the mercy of whatever slope you're or momentum you're carrying. I turn everything off in the snow, because as previously stated...
The last thing I want is for this truck to sense a slip as I'm creeping downhill, hit the brakes and then everything goes to hell. Yes I have experimented with this and tested on very steep hill with 8in of snow, both up and down. In dirt there is more traction/friction so slipping is less likely and that "elsd" will be more useful here and can help TO A POINT. I personally turn everything off regardless.
This is also just my opinion based on personal experience and may differ from others.
Once again, read the linked threads from the other members here as it will provide some useful insight to how these systems work

I’ve read that article before and some of it confuses me. I thought the LSD mode was more aggressive than the TRAC mode, but that’s not mentioned in the article. I’ve been stuck in snow/ice in 2wd many times, TRAC was doing nothing, so then switched to LSD and she pulled herself out. I was also once stuck in snow in 4wd enough that I got out to shovel to no avail. I Switched to 2wd LSD and got out. My rear wheels were on more solid ground. I like the LSD mode.

Note that when I get stuck in 2wd it’s usually on pulling out of a parking space on city streets that are a mixture of dry pavement, snow, and ice where 4wd isn’t practical. It’s slightly easier to hit the LSD switch than to wait for 4hi to engage and then unengage before I have to make a sharp corner on dry pavement.

Does TRAC work in reverse? I’ve not noticed that it does. I know LSD mode works in reverse. That might be another difference.

If you go with the LSD, you won't care if you get stuck. ;)

It might be. It really just depends on how much power either system holds. The ORs even get a better brake assist system.

The "elsd" or auto lsd is the the vehicle using the brakes on one side to allow power to the other side while not cutting power to the engine, as mentioned in https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/ "AUTO LSD (Automatic Limited Slip Differential) is a 2wd only mode that has TRAC turned on and VSC turned off. Meaning you get the brake simulated LSD functionality from TRAC while preventing VSC from intervening and cutting engine power. This is useful for powering out of situations where VSC is preventing you from getting out/started because it is constantly cutting engine power."
Your trac is there to provide individual braking to wheels that it detects are slipping. Best thing to do is go out there and test all of these, both on/off and 4wd/2wd so you know how the vehicle will respond

Huh! so it does go in 4wd. Interesting, and great vid! Thanks for posting. Very cool to see it working in real time.
