Other than mounting a tonneau cover, what is the purpose of the tracks on either side of my 2017 Access Cab bed.

I'm thinking of removing the tracks and installing a D-ring at each screw.

Can I mount a shell without the tracks? Is there metal under them and on top of the bed sides?

You can mount almost anything to those rails.
D-rings, tool mounts, bike mounts, storage boxes, crossbars, racks, etc.
Just about anything you can bolt to T-nuts.

They provide adjustable tie down locations.

So you can tie things down in the bed that you don't want to fall out.

T-nuts? Where and what size? The t-nuts I'm familiar with have spikes on one side to dig into wood.

Look under your back seats. I have an AC, but I bet your DCSB has under the seat storage. Sorry I just noticed that U don't actually own a Tacoma yet.

Do you have the tie down cleats? If your salesguy forgot to show you they are probably under the rear seats. A toneau can be mounted with the track system in place. Most companies have designed specifically for the tacoma.
    Same with shells.

Oops, I have those. Forgot about 'em! Even so, I'm curious about making custom attachments. What size and type of T-nuts are we talking?

You can also use brass toilet bolts and a wingnut for moving around with whatever accesory you add ... d rings etc.

Its one of the more useful features on the truck IMO. Pretty much a blank slate for whatever you want or need. Tie down, tool holders, cargo divider, cargo nets. The list can go on and on.
