I might do this with a spare Android phone. TMO prepaid is $100/yr for the first year then $10/yr thereafter for this kind of usage.

The Tasker app ($5) makes this kind of thing trivial. I send SMS to my phone to find it when it gets lost in the couch or whatever. Depending on the SMS I send it either makes itself easily findable (ie, lost in the house) or texts back the GPS coords, battery level, whatever (left or lost outside the house).

You could also turn on autoanswer silently and effectively eavesdrop on your own car. Dunno if you'd hear much, based on the funky mounting location.

If it's a theft concern, use LoJack with the early warning. With the early warning system, everytime your truck is moved without the key the system sends a signal to LoJack and they call you to verify. You also get a discount with your insurance.

I have Lojack in my truck and, just for the record, State Farm couldn't care less. I was seriously disappointed but they have nothing in their system as far as discounts for it.

If that's a 'plus' for you, call your agent first and verify they have a discount for you.
