I think it's too early to tell if there has been a shift from quality to quantity. That could very well be the case, but the previous gen Tacomas had issues as well. Just because we're seeing a number of reported issues on the 3rd gen doesn't mean that it's long term reliability and resale value will be any different than previous generations. All we can do is speculate until the current gen has been around 5-10 years.

I don't think some of these problems indicate reliability problems. More so general annoyances being voiced by those angry about their money spent. As would I fully expect to not have to deal with these issues on any car period let alone 34k+ trucks. I'm sure these trucks will be vibrating down the road whistling while doing so years from now.

Plus years ago people didn't have the Internet in the palm of their hand to voice said complaints. I'll revisit the Tacoma when I no longer need a fullsize truck. Until then I'll enjoy the smooth ride and throaty growl of the v8!

Yeah we needed the full size too. Too much crap to lug around in a Toyota. They'd be okay if I was a suburban commando, but I ain't, lol.

You're right, Toyota makes great vehicles. My reasoning for getting rid of the Tacoma was I got tired of the 3rd gen. erratic shifting and lack of lower RPM torque. I haven't written Toyota off, just this generation Tacoma. Owning the prior gen trucks was great.[/QUOTE]

I just don't get you guys that complain about the power of the 3rd Gen. Every time I drive mine I'm impressed with the power it has, pull out in traffic and it goes. How much power do you want? Do you want a truck to drive like a sports car? It's a mid size TRUCK for God's sake! Did you not test drive before you bought? Now if you want to talk about under powered, my first '82 with the 22R engine was under powered, especially when lifted. Mine had 5 speed and unless I was going downhill it never saw 5th gear with 33's on it. Offroad you had to be in low range only, 4h no go! Yeah, it was a 4 cylinder and the new one is a V6, but mine will go if I decided to put 33's on it which it will see one day.
This is my 19th vehicle, numerous full size Trucks and sports cars, it has more than enough power for me and my friends who have driven it. If you want the extra power and feel of a V8 or diesel you need to be in a full size Truck, not a mid size. Just my 2 cents worth.

My truck has 430hp. That's how much power I wanted. The Tacoma doesn't come close. When Toyota decides to put a proper power plant option in all their trucks maybe I would look at one.

After having four (4) Tacos, I think you are going to be disappointed in the long run.

I agree. In a couple of years I am going to hand the keys to my beloved taco to my son. I have been contemplating the f150 and the tundy or sticking with a Tacoma. the only reason I am contemplating the f150 is due to the fact that my neighbor owns a ford dealership (kissleback ford in Kissimmee) and could probably get me a hell of a deal. However, I can't get past Toyota reliability. I am pretty sure I will stick with toyota's. I used to be a big ford guy until I owned a Toyota. Have not looked back.

I was initially scared to make the move to ford, it's been really good to me so far and man is it comfortable. Everybody else I know has been having great experiences with their newer fords as well. I will say that the interior quality of the 3rd gen Tacoma is very nice. I didn't want to pay for the lariat or platinum to get the fancy ford interior.

The expedition forum reports problems with the 3.5L ecoboost

Your 5.0 is probably the good motor thus no issues

Also issues are creeping up in higher miles

I would love a raptor myself but the 3.5 scares me

My F150 (work truck) has the 3.5 eco, almost to 173,000. Other than some brake issues (calipers), it's been solid.

I think Toyota has shifted from quality to quantity and some proof for this is the reoccurring problems showing up in the 3rd gen carried over from the 2nd gen.

One is the windshield kazoo noise. There have been many threads on this in both the 3rd gen and 2nd gen forums and the cause and fix is exactly the same. I've posted video links of trucks for each year from 2005 - 2016 (there was also a guy with a 2017 complaining about it) showing the kazoo noise here - post 69:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wind-noise.443993/page-4

The other is the squeaky barn door clutch that some guys are having especially in warm/hot and humid weather. That has been a problem since 2005 and the 3rd gens are showing the same thing like in these threads:
To me that shows Toyota's QA/QC has gone down hill big time. They can't fix a reoccurring and reported set of problems on the production line after 12 years?

That's actually why I went with the 5.0. I initially was looking at the 2.7 ecoboost for the mpgs but I was scared off by all the issues posted about the ecoboost in general. Now I hear more people having 0 issues with them. Oh well at least I know my 5.0 is good for the long haul

Wow. I have been off TW for about 24 months now. I didn't know the 3rd gen was so disliked!

What was the issue? Was it a Duramax or a gasser?

I have read some issues with the first couple years of the GM 8 spd tranny, I think centered around the torque converter- not as robust as it should have been. The 2016+ models seem to have those bugs worked out. GM replaced quite a few tranny's on those first runs..

The 6.2 and the 5.3 are pretty reliable though. The 6.0 in the HD models is pretty stout as well.

The F-150 I was looking at before I bought my Silverado had the 2.7 Ecoboost. It drove well, but I'm leery of that power plant being so new. After the Taco, I'd say I'm once bitten twice shy in that regard.
