That's gonna be heavy as shit unless you get nothing in it. AC adds weight, fridge adds weight, bunk bed adds weight, etc. They said 14 is the most common for a Tacoma, and 16 if you don't load bikes or quads. But then why would you get a toy hauler.

Yep, after building one on their website it was way to heavy for a Tacoma. A 14 is as big as I dare go and that seems like it will be pushing it.

Well, after I made my post last night. I was checking to make sure I received the correct harness cable. Came to the realization that I received the 3041 rather than the 3017 so I overnighted a new harness. I’m doing to the install tomorrow night. Leave on Friday, after work, to head to Charlotte for a track event.

Installed everything last night. Super easy install. Took me less than 20 mins from start to finish.

I wish I had a picture of my P3. I attached mine to the lower dash to the right of the steering wheel. I hit it with my knee for about a week and haven't since. It's immediately accessible to my dominant hand whenever needed, and I can read the display with minimal issue. I'll try to take a picture today and upload it.

I realize this is probably a stupid question...but I just got a 2017 TRD Sport with the tow package. I was originally under the impression that the brake controller was included. All of the installation talk on here speaks to plugging one cable in. Is that it? When you plug the aftermarket box in you can hook up to a trailer with brakes and have everything work?

Yes, that's correct. You need the brake controller and adapter cable, which then gets plugged into the factory provided plug behind the driver's side kick panel. Once you have that complete, you can hook up a trailer with brakes, set your adjustment on the controller and off you go.

I pushed mine into the change holder. I've never had anything in the change holder.
I sit real close to the dash so I couldn't place it below the wheel. Its in there REAL tight. I dremeled out a rectangle to feed the plug through.

When I first tried pushing it in, it was so tight that I thought you guys were faking your install pictures.... You just gotta push it in there

Just did the ESP cubby mount install using the Tekonsha P3 brake controller ($117 Amazon prime) and 3017-P wiring harness ($15 Amazon). Turned out awesome. Literally plug and play and about a 10 minute total install.

By the way, I just found another thread where a guy melted his truck harness using the 3017-P harness and caused $6k in damage...he miraculously got Tekonsha to pay for the damage. They have since released a new harness (3031) that includes a ground wire. Wish I had seen that before hand! Any thoughts on switching harnesses?

exactly the same set up I did, looks and functions great for me. except I went with the other proportional model controller from Reese. the one with the blue boost buttons. I have an older Tek P2 but I didn't like how far it stuck out and was going to get the P3, even got the ESP plate but again it just was to intrusive for me when I only use it x number of times a year.

I have an older Prodigy that was installed in my last truck. Ordered the wiring harness for the Tundra and proceeded to install. I didn't want to lose the coin cubby as I use it for other things. Under the dash on the left side was going to cause knee damage and/or wind up breaking the controller or mounting clip, so I opted to install on the knee wall on the right side. The harness wires were too short, though, so I had to solder in about 6 more inches to each wire to get it to work. But now it's in and in a spot that works for me. 20180817_133620.jpg 20180817_133640.jpg

You sure that mounting angle is ok for proper trailer braking?

I don't think I have the instructions any more for it. I'll double-check the mounting info before I pull anything with it. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, it looks like I'm going to have to move it. Maybe I can mount it in the center cubby in front of the shifter.
