Pulling my Chalet all over the western US with the 16, just as I did with the 02.. Trailer tongue wt at 280+/-. Will put airbags on.... likely, but not definitely. Had them on the 02, was a good thing.

How far does it stick out of that cubby area?

It's not in that cubby hole
It's mounted below it. Had it mounted the same exact spot on the 02. Close to and below the left knee, but was never a conflict.

I'd say an inch and a half.

About 2 inches. Push it in as far as you can, but leave enough so the manual switch on the bottom still works.

I just did this install today. Used my dremel to make short work of the hole in the cubby, popped the kick panel off, plugged in and shoved the P3 in... Super easy!

Is it just me but not really loving the controller that sticks out. Anyone attempt to take the guts out and mount flush in a custom factory-looking faceplate?

So I was going to get this for my 2016 OR Tacoma but I want to install the controller in the glove box. For the folks that have done this already is this included wire harness long enough to reach the glove box (planning on putting small hole in back of glove box to hide and keep wires tidy). If not is there a place to pick up an extended harness.

    Thank you
    Shawn

You really want to be able to reach the controller while driving so you can manually activate the trailer brakes if/when needed.

The harness isn't long enough anyway. Use the pocket. :notsure:

The harness is pretty short for anywhere other than the cubby, but if you really don't like it there you could splice in longer wires and try in the center console cubby above the Qi charger area.... but if you're new to trailer brakes, my advice is don't start cutting wires and all that fun stuff, better to accept no risk of wire breaks and know that you're controller will function right. There is a harness available that you can wire yourself by tekonsha, but it's not something I'd play with, a little further research by you should find it.... same part number with a different letter following it....

besides trying to run wires across to the glovebox... doesn't sound like fun to me.

I have been thinking of doing this. I already took my controller apart and it seems like it will be fairly easy. Might start on this when I get a break from work. I will do a write up.

I installed in the glove box. Extended the wires, fed the wires behind the dash, took the plastic cabin filter cover out of rear of the glove box, used a one inch hole saw to cut a circle in the cabin filter cover, fished the wires through and connected to my P3. I just towed a 4700 pound concession trailer almost 200 miles with no troubles at all...well other than crappy mpg. In the cubby is great but I'm ocd about stuff like that. Having 3/4 of the controller hanging out of a cubby thats obviously not designed for that wasn't going to happen for me. To the others who did it that way, that's cool, just isn't where I wanted it. The other option for me was the tekonsha wireless controller. Plug it in to the cigarette lighter and off you go. Stow away when not in use. Splicing the wires also was a no brainier. Use the correct method of splicing and make sure to connect the correct wires and its no different than the wires coming from the factory 4 feet longer. And fishing the wires to the passenger side took about 30 seconds. Route up high to avoid accelerator and brake pedal travel, go to passenger side, put a straight coat hangar through to the drivers footwell, tape wire harness to coat hangar, go back to passenger side and pull the coat hangar through. There is more room behind the console than you think.

Do I need the Teconsha P3 or will a cheaper one do and still be plug and play? I'm towing a 3000 pound camper.
