I ran across this controller, and was wondering what is the difference between using something small like this (clean mounting) vs what has been posted above? If nothing really different, then this could be an option for those that do not want to have a brake controller sticking out of the dash

It's low and to the left... sticks out 2 or 3 inches. I only notice it when I'm getting in and out of the truck. Perfect spot to me...

I have the next model up in their product range, I need to write up the rest of the details for my thread but it's awesome.

Works fine on trailers with electric brakes. Have towed four different trailers and not one problem. Price is still good too as Australian dollar is still down.

For those wondering how the tacoma does towing heavy loads... well I've been doing short haul (up to about an hour on mixed highway and backroads with a fully loaded 3 horse trailer at around the 6200 lbs around colorado springs area. I can tow at 75 and keep up with traffic without problems, but I'm revving at 5-6k most of the time, if I drop down to 65 then the truck pulls along the highway much easier in the 3-4k rev range. I'm quite happy with the Tacoma as my do it all vehicle for towing local, off roading and getting to the supermarket. I once had a tundra which I loved but economy sucked which meant I couldn't afford to use it and it was so large, wasn't comfortable for the wife to manouver in car park....

I used my Tacoma with the Teconsha P3 today. Reading the adjustment directions it said to continue to increase the voltage number from 6 until the trailer skids when using the manual brake control. It took until setting 9.5 or 10 before the 3000 pound popup camper trailer would skid. Does that seem high? On my initial drive using setting 6 the temperature of the brakes was only 85. At setting 9 later the temp was 195. The trucks brake temp was 190 each time.

I left mine on the initial setting of 6 and it feels comfortable for me. I'm sure I could make further adjustments, but will use the manual knob or the boost setting if needed, mainly because my trailer weight varies depending on number of horses (each one is ball park 1000 lbs) I haven't had any issues so far.... interested to see what others think of this topic

I have my Tekonsha Voyager mounted the same way. I prolly COULD have installed it in the 'lil cubby hole like I see in the pics in here, but I had it like this in my '02, and I like it here (on the underside)
    .

Personally, (and I mean this is STRICKLY MY opinion) I simply cannot warm up to the looks of the install in that cubby, in spite of the location looking very good. I use the cubby hole for business cards and like items.
Argument comes back to mounting the controller underside, "man, that's a shin killer". Well, I never make physical contact with it mounted there. Close, yes. Hit it? No.

I tried and Voyager is a bit wider than the cubby hole, does not fit.

Did it display anything on the information screen in the instrument panel?

No not that i know of on the actual dash / head unit. Theres no interface on the 4 or 5 wires that connect to the controller to allow that.

Bummer, you'd think with the newer models they'd have something for them. They offer a tow package, but it doesn't seem to have nay sort of trailer brake controls, plus they completely forgot to install it on my truck.

No, I used a mounting plate from my tundra , I took out the cubby, drilled holes, and bolted it on. Easy, clean, and secure.

What kind of mirrors/mirror extensions is everyone using for towing?
