That's nice work, I miss the pillar guage setup from my Excursion. I wish the Tacoma had a test port or something else available to make this easier, although, your work looks outstanding.

Update. Hauled home a 7x16 enclosed trailer today. Driving through Portland OR in traffic at 5pm, outside temp of 85. Trans temp got up to 180*. Once I was able to get it out on the highway, it stayed around 165* in 4th through the hills. About 150* in D on the flats.

Why not just install the temp sensor in the trans fluid out line?

Because it was cleaner and easier to put it in the pan than to cut a line and add a fitting. Plus, it gave me the chance to check for and clean the gunk out of the pan. It still works well. I have verified temps with my Ethos a couple times.

I don't have that truck anymore, so I'm not 100% but I think this is the one I used. https://www.autometer.com/2-trans-t...EeCE1YLhVzdgcXsoYuMaAhWtEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
I have had good luck with Autometer gauges. If you use a pod, you'll need 2 1/16 gauges. Here is the link to the 96-00 tacoma pod. https://gaugepods.com/products/4-runner-tacoma-2-pod-full-pillar
I got the sensor bung on ebay I think. Autometer does sell them, but ebay or Amazon will be cheaper with no difference in quality, just look for one that doesn't look like it was meant for a toy. It needs a 1/8" npt bung. If you don't want it soldered/welded, companies like Moroso make bulkhead fittings with o-ring seals, but I would recommend silver soldered/welded bung.

Thank you for the writeup! Definitely would like to keep an eye on the trans temps in the future. I wish there was a way the Scangauge could read trans temps but I haven't seen anything yet.

ScanGauge can indeed read trans temps on 2nd gen automatics.

As @Dm93 said, 2nd gen should be compatible for SG trans temp. I didn't go that route because I didn't really care for the look of the SG and I needed a place to put my air pressure gauge too.
