So pushing the shift rod all the way in (towards the front of the truck) is 2wd?

I found someone with a great explanation of the orientation for the pinion gear. Couldn’t find anything like this on the internet so I thought I’d share. Here’s how it goes:

Only 2 of the rings should make contact with the pinion gear when set to 2wd, 4HI, 4Lo. The only time it makes contacts with all 3 is while it is indexing through the settings. The red markings are demonstrating the resting places for the pinion.

I have an 08 Tacoma Sport. It would not go int 4WD the other day. Reading thru alot of these forums I removed the Front actuator, soldered the connections. No joy. Tapped on the transfer case actuator and it went into 4wd. Then I could not get it back into 2wd. I thought maybe it was out of sync with the 2wd/4wd switch and transfer case actuator. I removed the cover of the front actuator moved it into 2wd. Now the dash light flashed 4 the 4wd light. I verified the truck is in 2wd. 2wd/4wd switch is in 2wd. still will not go into 4wd when switched. I have tried to go to the troubleshooting link provided on these forums but they have been removed. Anyone have a good link? and alos a good part number for the sensors on the transfer case?

Sorry to bring up an old topic. Just for clarification, which of the labels in the picture are correct? The 2wd starting on the upper right side of the three straight contact pads, or on the left of them? Lol, I've been pulling my hair out with this truck.

To the left of them, i was confused as well.

Recently took mine apart, cleaned the contacts, and put it back together. Everything worked!

Hi there, I’m in no way a mechanic but like to play around a little. Had a problem with the 4Lo engaging, so took it to my trustworthy mechanic and told me the the transfer actuator is done for…looking around I can only find (f.e. In rockauto) actuators (no idea if its a diff or a transfer actuator) so my question, since the picture looks just the same as some posted here, are they the same or one part wont replace the other?

I found a couple, trying to keep Aisin, pictures uploaded.

Thanks for absolutely any help on the matter, have been searching for days and am really lost93C3A388-B53A-4F11-8BF2-F7DF641E7B3A.jpgB8D444DF-F8B2-4239-8E41-7173FE06F3C1.jpg

I could be wrong here, but it looks like the top one is for transfer case, and bottom one is for front diff

Hi everybody. I’ve gotten a lot of help from this group and this is my first post.

I have a similar problem to what’s being discussed. As I removed the cover from my TCase actuator it rotated clockwise a bit which surprised me. It seemed to have some tension on it forcing it to rotate. I saw a YouTube video by Johnnie Jones where he showed that the 3 prongs on the pinion gear should be at the 3:00 position for 2H. Mine are at the 4:00 position, and by looking at Wicked Yoda’s photo above I think it’s in the transition zone which will confuse the ECU.

If this is right, my question is how do I reposition it correctly?
    Thanks for any help.

If the timing hasn't been messed with just rotate the gear as far counterclockwise as it will go, that should be 2wd.
