Just did the rear differential myself. I just bought he truck used and it didn't look like anyone touched the rear diff in 143k miles. I drained it for about 30 minutes and only got 2-1/2 quarts of fluid. I think the manual calls for 3 quarts. Anyone else experience low fill from the manufacturer? It was the same when I drained the transmission and only drained 2 quarts :argue:

I run Lucas 85-140w it’s a little thicker and really quiets down the drivetrain. I order a case on Amazon it’s hard to find in autopart stores, if you do they never have enough then your running all over town.

For sure. They got one of those things here at the dealer where they put a few things on to make it look off road worthy or something. Like what you would expect a stealer to do with low grade flashy mods to make it look kwel. Get this, they got a window sticker on it of >$61k. Yeah. Right. Maybe I will just pay cash...

    Pretty much stock right now
I suppose I should consider doing this service on my new to me '07 with 85K. Probably original oil in there, although there was a frame swap 4 years ago. I'll have to check the service records on the off chance one of the 3 prior owners sprang for it. I just replaced the front gas tank strap after noticing the tank was hanging down. Service records showed Toyota told the owner about the broken strap, but he passed on it. That one baffles me.

EDIT: Now I know why he didn't do the gas tank strap. Service record shows they wanted $455 for this. Ridiculous. The part and hardware were $85, and it took about 20 minutes. Took longer to get the skid plate off.

It's a possiblity that there may have been some static fluid loss past the seals. Oil does break down slightly over time but my money would be on the static loss.

    This forum has been great.

Changed the transfer and rear yesterday in about 30 min. Half that time was just filling the rear.

Had the stealership do the rear a bit ago. Not sure there was even a quart in the rear and the drain plug was not very tight. Put a little under 3.5qts before it drained. T

That front differential drain bolt is gonna be a problem. Ordered the lexus bolt, heated it up current one and sprayed a bunch of liquid wrench over it in the hopes it will be loose. Popped it a few times with the ball pin hammer.

Can't imagine how many places have stripped that stupid 10mm hex bolt.

Keep soaking is with pb blaster and let it work in. Also, clean out the hex hole really well with compressed air or whatever, helps to get as much of a bite on it as possible

How much was that? I’ve thought about trying to convert a garden sprayer.

Time is money $63.00 USD or $82.00 CND .... thought about using a garden sprayer myself but because most of them are taller than this pump it would be easier as it will slide right under my truck....

Seriously, put some Teflon tape on the plug before you reinstall it. I've been doing it for years and have never had a plug stick on me.

Here's the one I made from a small garden sprayer. Used a piece of soft copper I had at the end to hang into the fill hole.

That’s fantastic. Are you able to get the full fill without having to re-pump?
