The dealer steered me towards Type IV, Mobil 1 makes some of the best oil. I couldn't buy it locally, so I went with the next best thing. If you veer away from "Toyota" brand transmission oil, I would buy full synthetic type IV. There are several good brands.

My truck has never shifted this smooth. Good luck on it.

I would look in the owners manual for fluid types/capacities. If you do not have one, you may obtain at:

http://www.toyota.com - click on "owners" - get a uid/pswd - follow the yellow brick road.

Or...even easier - download one for your 2001 from here:

    http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/toyota/2001-toyota-tacoma-owners-manual

Owners manuals for a lot of makes/models at that site.

Your 2001 6 cyl Tacoma uses Dexron-III transmission fluid. It's clearly stated in the manual. As stated, other fluid types there as well.

How dirty was your filter? How brown was your fluid? I'm debating dropping the pan and cleaning the filter because my fluid doesn't look too bad, and I don't really have a convenient way to let the new seal set for 24 hours.

Thank you all for the input. This definitely helps me make the small decisions on the oil and how to drain. I don't know if anyone has any opinions on these two Youtube videos if you have seen them but they do different approaches which was confusing at first. As soon as I get the job going I will post how it went. Thank you all again

So I checked my tranny fluid today while the engine and tranny was hot and running after pulling my trailer around town. the fluid was about a half inch above the top cold marker. anybody know how approximately how much trans fluid I should add and what kind? I have a v6 auto prerunner btw and it's worth mentioning it's been about 20k miles since I bought the truck and had it flushed, but I don't recall with kind of trans fluid they used. I don't want to flush it yet, as I'm kinda broke. I just wanna top it off for now.

What is "the top cold marker"? The tacoma's don't have a dipstick, just a plug you remove and hopefully see a little fluid dribble out when it is at the right temp.

Not a safe blanket statement. Depends on the year and model.

    Mine has one.

The Auto transmission has a dipstick. Dextron ll or lll is fine.

depends on the year for both. '08 no dipstick and WS fluid

there is no top cold marker. You have to check the level @ a certain temp.
