    Hey everyone

Accidentally drained and filled transmission fluid with TYPE IV. 2002 Tacoma 2.7 Pre Runner. Manual says Dex II or Dex III.

Is TYPE IV backwards compatible? Should I go buy Dex 3 and re drain and fill? Don’t want transmission to give out.

    Please lmk. Thanks in advance

I think you should be good it essentially is an updated version. Il say it on the bottle in small words. But if I were you id put valvoline sybthetic and a magnefine filter and add a scangauge to monitor temps. I did this and this stop lped my hard shifts when it was cold

The bottle should state it’s compatibility. If not, look for the product’s data sheet.

Yes the next generation of fluid needs to be back ward compatible.

As the former fluid is no longer produced.

Look on the label and see if it lists DEX iii and if it does you’re safe. If it doesn’t you will need to drain and refill. Oil is forgiving that you put the wrong product in and it won’t cause your transmission to blow but nothing something you’ll want to run for 20K miles on.

DEX VI is the latest DEX product AFAIK. III hasn't been made in years.

I think you'll find T IV is just fine.

I think @Crom did a trans fluid write up once. Maybe he'll swing by and chime in.

Little compatibility book at store says specifically for my 2000 2.7 Automatic A340E PreRunner.
