The first is at operation temp after an hour of driving.

The second is about ten miles into my morning commute.

Whoa what the hell. Do you think those are correct? Also are you able to pull the PIDs from the app?

Will be nice to have the engine oil temperature PID available.

    Thanks

    Hey tow-coma,
This thread (and forum) is full of great info and glad there is a bunch of folks nice enough to share. Based on this thread I went out and got the Kiwi 3 OBD reader and the OBD Fusion (iOS). The Kiwi 3 came in the mail yesterday and spent a couple hours tinkering with the setup to get the Transmission Fluid Temp sensors to work (pan and torque converter).

May want to update your initial post based on my findings below (even though Hank-Heel's screen grab shows otherwise). He might have imported from file, I entered all the data by hand.

Wanted to highlight that the information in the initial post is slightly off regarding the OBD Mode and PID for the ODB Fusion's "User-defined PID" setup. OBD mode of 221 is invalid per the app and would not let me create a custom PID. After looking it up, turns out the ODB mode (typical values: 01, 21 and 22) is one byte and not 2 (or 1 1/2). So the "22" is a single byte represented in two nibbles (4-bit segments)). That last '2' means to send two bytes and the format is in hex. This means the PID number is two bytes: 1628 (0x16 and 0x28 but sent as 0x1628 by the tool).

So what should be entered is:
    OBD Mode: 22
PID Number: 1627 <---- for pan temp or
PID Number: 1628 <---- for torque converter temp

This is assuming that these PIDs are correct, but should be since they also work in the Torque Pro app (based on others' feedback).

Once I made that change to my OBD Fusion "user-defined PIDs", I was able to see the temp sensors work. My truck was warm (parked it 1hr before) and I had just started it back up when I was checking it. The temp readings were approx 126F (pan) and 129F (TC).

    thanks.

Thanks for the info. I updated and made a note of current testing in the first post Apple section

@PB FAB Just curious what the temps you are getting just driving around town (no load in truck bed or no trailer)? Can you get the PID numbers from the OBD Fusion app? I did not get the extra function in the app that already has the Toyota PIDs, I entered the PIDs manually to get the ATF pan and torque converter temps.

Want to see if my readings match. I get 175 to 185 driving around town on the torque converter but it increases to ~195 when I am stopped at the stop light. Then it goes back down when I start to drive again. Sound typical?

    thanks.

I’m always under a load. I have a snugtop, and at least 200 pounds of stuff in truck at all times so 400 to 500 pounds daily. My truck has tow package also with tranny cooler.

I can not access the pid info for the extra stuff purchased. I can access the stock stuff on app.

Maybe someone can teach me if it’s possible.

My number were a little higher than yours, 190 to 198 running. There is a little heat soak on the converter when you stop. It takes a little while to stabilize on the temps. Sounds normal to me.

I can say those are normal. The thermostat only cracks open around 195F. I assume your pan temps are 180? The cooler fluid from the cooler should cool the pan down when the thermostat is open

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, our trucks sound in line with each other seeing you have an extra 400 to 500 lbs compared to mine.

I'm going to head over to the Torque Forums and have them look into the oil temps this week. Takes a bit of testing on my part with them so I'll need a few days

Yah, the pan sits around 180-185. Thanks for the feedback.

Was worried as I was looking around on the forums and I see some of the 2nd gen guys say their trucks run around 175, so got me nervous thinking something is wrong with the truck or my equation was off.

I have been told that the second gen either doesn't have a thermostat or they have a lower set thermostat. I'm not sure which is true

Has anybody had any luck with getting this to work on the 4 cylinder automatic? I have a 4 cylinder, I put the PID's in Torque Pro and the trans temps don't show up. It just shows "-" in the TF1 display. Thanks!

I just made an attempt too and it did not successfully pull data. I use OBD Fusion which kicks an error message at me, I think if you are using Torque Pro it shows a blank if it gets no data from that PID.

What we are looking at here is the 4 cylinder is a different ECU type than the V6, as confirmed by OVTuning. So we're in uncharted waters here with a "new gen" transmission with an "old gen" ECU and to put it bluntly, no one cares about the 4 bangers so no one really does any development on this.

However I just bought the "advanced diagnostics" from OBD Fusion to go with their app ($10 on top of the $4 for the app) and it appears to have 3 trans temp PIDs preprogrammed, I'll have to see if any of those work.

Will report in tomorrow or something, too darn comfy in the meantime. :p
