I want to add a aftermarket transmission cooler to my Tacoma. I’m not hauling anything extremely heavy, basically the following- kayak trailer, 5x10 trailer for transporting Harley motorcycle & riding lawnmower.
I just want a peace of mind knowing that my transmission is being cooled and not overheating.
Can anyone recommend a cooler and how to install. I want to install myself. Thanks Tacoma World.

Don't all these gen 3 tacomas still come with some sort of transmission cooler still? I think toyota has made them part of the radiator now. No longer are they external.

they sell various sizes of those on like orielly auto, not too pricey. it's the same design just more levels. I'm sure you could find them elsewhere. stock one is good but small, not sure how to install the "taller" ones. nothing special, same black paint. no need to get some super expensive one, just be sure to check your trans fluid levels after a few runs after

Thank you guys for all your advice and suggestions. I think for the time being I won’t worry about the transmission cooler. I will however check out my three local junk yards for a transmission cooler, so that when and if I decide to put one on I’ll have it.
Does anyone know of a link or video on how to install a transmission cooler on a newer (2020) gen 3 model?
    Thanks again guys!!

Added an extra cooler on my 03 Tundra using flat stock aluminum bar from big box depot. Very easy install and it probably didn’t do much for the trans. My scangauge only registered around 5 degrees lower on the high end. Again, not worth the effort. YMMV

My buddy tows more than that with his compact sedan. Have some faith in your taco.

I believe the towing capacity of the 4 cyl tacos is 3500lb (6900lbs for the 6cyl) and that is well above my estimate of the weight of the stuff you described.

Here is how manufacturers determine the towing capacity:

Maybe look at a Scan Gauge 2. Many TW members like Scan Gauge to get transmission temps in real time. This will show you if there is a need for concern.

Okay, will do and thank you. Have always towed things with a V-6 or V-8. First time having a 4 cylinder truck.

I live in Arizona where temps get hot... real hot... and I tow a small camper now and again usually dead of summer.

I asked my independent go-to dudes at the shop about it and they said you don't need it - plenty of threads here about the need or not.

I should get one of those scan gauges tho and see for myself.
