So is there a transmission update on the way or is this thread just typical Tacoma World dribble drabble? :duel:

When I bought my 2010, it shifted badly. I had it back in for something and they reflashed the computer or trans and it's been perfect since then. Sounds like the same thing this time.

The only problem with ECT mode, for me, is that it seems "harsh" as it responds especially at slower speeds right as you get on the gas--like it jumps. If they could merge default vs ect so that it's smooth to engage but linear in its responsiveness they'd have a decent transmission.

I haven't heard anything official. If Toyota is actually working on an update they're keeping it to themselves. I've been driving mine around in S5 and it definitely shifts differently, even with ECT off. I like it enough that I don't use D anymore, and I rarely use ECT anymore as well. If they never update the transmission shift points I am content driving it this way, but my personal opinion is that the way the truck drives in S (or Sport mode or whatever it's called) is how it should have come from the factory when in D, and the sport shift mode shouldn't be a gear limiter but instead a direct control over what gear you are in and it should shift instantly when you change it.

I can't remember your most recent post concerning what truck you are going with, but if you decided to go with the gen 3 taco I'd test drive another one and try S mode to see how you like it.

How is S mode different from ECT? All S5 would do is never use 6th gear, correct? How does that change driving dynamics around town? And how would driving with ECT and S5 mode together work?

I think you correct. S mode limits the gear mode its in and ect alters the tgrottle response and shifting points. 2 parallel features in my mind.

Also, S5 mode basically turns the transmission into a gen 2 auto tranny right? I know the ratios are different, but only slightly. The gen 3 transmission is basically the same but with an added overdrive gear that is only intended to be used when conditions allow (flat road, downhill etc).

I am of the opinion that the ECT button also disables the Atkinson cycle in addition to reprograming the throttle response curve. I can be driving on flat level ground at steady speed around 1500 rpm, with the ECT button engaged and if I turn it off, the instantaneous MPG reading goes up even with the RPM staying the same. I think the accelerator lag we all feel and a lot of the "hunting for gears" comes from the engine trying to decide whether to downshift, disable the Atkinson cycle, or both each time you try to accelerate.

This is my observation also. I would like to prove the throttle mapping difference. It could just be the transmission shifting into a lower gear which would result in higher RPM and more acceleration, but it DOES feel like the throttle map changes. I wonder if the Torque app could be used to see the difference? I haven't had a chance to try it.

The throttle map definitely changes. Without ECT, there is probably 1/2 to 1" of initial pedal travel where the tachometer basically does nothing and there is almost no response from the engine. With ECT on, the throttle response is nearly instantaneous from even a small change in pedal position.

I'll just jump in and say my truck doesn't have the gear hunting issue. I do not drive with cc on though. Just did a 600 mile round trip this past weekend from Allentown, PA to Pittsburgh and back. I averaged about 20 going, and 22 mpg on the way home. Hills all over along 76. When I hit a hill, it downshifted to 5-4 as needed and rapidly went back to 6 once I crested the hill. I gave it some gas as needed on the bigger inclines, but for the most part, I have no complaints. This again, was without cruise. Truck is stock with about 3300 miles on it.

My commute to work is about 7-8 miles with 6 stop lights, one lane roads, with a speed limit from 25-45. I'm averaging about 18-19.5 depending on traffic. I don't baby it, but am not on it like its a race car, and am driving in D.

    Hope this helps.

My shifting sucks and I average 15-16 mpg while intentionally watching my acceleration to try to improve fuel economy. My truck was short 2 full quarts of transmission fluid when I got it checked and it didn't fix the shifting problems, it just slightly lessened them.

I watched for a while to, and got about the same. Then I said fuck it, quit paying attention to it, just get in and drive it now. I have the center display on mph, and just check the trip summary screen when I shut it off. Mpgs have improved. When I was watching, I noticed that if I gave it more throttle off the start, and got up to speed faster hitting higher gears sooner, my mpgs would be better for the trip than babying it. Did that like 10 times to and from work, 5 each method. When I saw the results is when I decided to quit watching and just drive.

I use s4 for city driving where I usually only get up to about 45. I've noticed an improvement in mileage because the truck doesn't have to shift nearly as much between lights and small accelerations.

If I left it in D, it would shift to OD gears by the time I got to 35; then any small accelerations and slow downs would be the typical up-down-up-down shifting.
