Hey all, Im new here and have spent a long time searching for the answers, but can't seem to confirm all the transmission options for the '11-15 PreRunner with the 2.7.

Would you all be so kind to weigh in and inform me of which options i am able to choose from?

I do have a couple additional questions regarding this topic..
Im specifically trying to buy a 2.7 PreRunner and not the base model 4x2 for numerous reasons..

The one thing that really bothers me is it seems that the PreRunner was only offered with an automatic transmission.. and for a 4 cylinder, the 5 speed manual seems like it would be the most suitable option. Do you agree? Or is an auto behind a 2.7 just fine for some?

Does anyone have anything negative or positive to say about the auto 2.7 PreRunner?

Assuming that there are numerous AT options, which one would you suggest?

Is it true that you can successfully manually shift with these auto gearboxes?

Would it be out of the question to swap a MT in if I didn't care for the AT?

And again, most importantly, I would love to know of every single transmission option that was available in the '11-'15 2.7 PreRunner. I could greatly use any and all info passed my way.

    Many thanks!

Welp.. I think I finally figured out the transmission options and it is much simpler than I thought (as you all probably know already).. It seems that the only two options are the a340e and a750e. I am kind of leaning towards not getting a 4x2 prerunner with the 2.7 since I am worried the truck will be fairly slow without having control of the transmission like I would if there was a 5 speed manual. Oh well!

I am very curious to hear anyones opinion on this matter!

They make a 5speed with the 2.7 in a PreRunner with the access cab and regular cabs

Ive only seen the auto with the 2.7 in double cab short beds

I have an access cab 2.7L 5spd prerunner

Just buy the v6 and get your trans of choice.

    I recommend you shop for a '13

I have the 2.7 liter 2TR-FE with the 4 speed automatic and it is just fine it also comes with a dipstick. Yes you can manually shift it, but why?

Thank you. Is yours 2011+? I was under the impression that they stopped offering the manual in the prerunner altogether with the 2011 model year. Im am pretty darn set on finding one that is 2011-2015.

Thanks. I am also considering the v6 with 4wd, but it is worth mentioning that I would be perfectly happy with an automatic overall. The reason I am hesitant about the 2.7 with the AT is that this is my first Tacoma and I have been reading alot of forums where it is mentioned that an AT behind the 2.7 is specifically a bad combo. It is just hard for me to determine if that is just a matter of personal preference or if it is generally agreed upon that the auto 2.7 is a bad combination overall (regardless of personal preference). Im probably overthinking it.. lol

May I ask why you suggest 2013? Just curious.

Awesome!! This is great to know. Much appreciated. Regarding manually shifting, I just asked that since I had heard complaints about not having enough power with the auto 2.7 so I just like having the option if i find the need for more power when approaching a hill or something. Im sure I will be really happy with this combination. Im coming from a 1980's Diesel Isuzu P'up with 90hp haha.

It's personal preference. My 5 lug is a 2.7 auto and I like it just fine. I don't need 4wd, and I don't need to look like I have 4wd (prerunner) and I don't need a desert runner (prerunner)

Like @Jimmyh says, the bonus is a dipstick and easy to PM reliable transmission.

I could see where if one lived in a very hilly or mountainous area and ran at hwy speeds on a regular basis that the 2.7 might be frustrating with the need for downshifting and such to maintain speed.

So, all the bad press you read is often from people who think these should be racy trucks (kids) and they certainly are not that.

The only way for you to know is to test drive. Not around the block, but a long test drive in typical conditions you drive in. Since you are not looking new, do it with 3-4 samples, just to kinda rule out an unusually weak outlier. If you don't like what you feel, you can move on to the next combo. It's always better for you to make the decision than have the interwebs make it for you. After all, it's you wallet getting plucked.

I suggested the '13 slightly tongue in cheek as I have one. However, if you look closely, there was a significant cosmetic refresh in '12, as in front end parts don't interchange with earlier years. I happen to like the '12+ better.

And the '13 was the last to have a couple more things standard or prewired, depending on the model. For example, my 5 lug was prewired for a backupcam in the mirror. So by finding a mirror (which also had autodim, compas and temp) and the camera, I was able to PnP that in a few minutes.

It sounds silly to most, but I really like having the dipstick on my trans. In the 2nd gens the 2.7 was the only one to have that. Now in the 3rd gens, even the 2.7 loses out. I don't 'need' it in terms of it consuming fluid that I have to check all the time, but it allows me to see/smell it, when I do a drain and fill easily measure it, etc etc.

@Clearwater Bill That is all great advice. Thank you. I personally realize that these trucks aren't racy trucks and have no need for that. Yes, I just need to start test driving some.
The primary reason I am shooting for the prerunner, is that it commonly has the highest payload of them all. I will need to fill the bed up every month or two with as much hardwood lumber as I can transport safely. I know it sounds a bit rediculous.. but the extra couple hundred lbs of payload really matters to me, however, I have been going off the original Tacoma brochures when researching payload and I am now finding that the payloads vary compared to these original brochures. And it goes farther than what extras are added when they were originally sold.
'13.. Cool, thank you. All good to know.
