Ford may use a constant rotating bearing , this is not the debate .I mentioned Ford earlier and indicated their " lazy " wording when making clutch adjustments . Think about it from an engineering standpoint using a cheap bearing packed with crappy grease .The less that bearing spins is going to play a big factor in warrantee repairs . Think about the 17 year old kid learning to drive a manual transmission ...he/ she is going to wear the clutch disc down on a new truck . Toyota allows for free play to accomodate for clutch disc wear .Using your theory , Toyota would be replacing all our clutches at 10k.
Once again I quote the FSM . Where in the adjustment procedure does it list release bearing pre-load or how to check for it ? You cant compress fluid . And you are 100% incorrect regarding clutch disc wear . As the clutch disc wears out , plate loading increases because the fingers on the pressure plate move towards the release bearing . Do you know how a diaphram clutch actually works ? This is clutches 101 and how any diaphram clutch has worked for over 100 years . Just for the heck of it , I went to a couple other forums GM , Ford , Dodge to see what they were saying . The same debate plays out on those forums as well . Trust me , your theory is 100 % incorrect

Related but slightly off clutch topic. Does anyone get a strange smell when reversing? Last night I backed into a parking spot and a lady nearby asked if i ran over a skunk recently. I've noticed this smell faintly a few times before but usually in the winter when in 4wd and in reverse. Anyone else know of cause?

I have. For some reason the clutch has a tendancy to slip in reverse especially in 4WD.

So the smell is actually the slipping of the clutch?

It smells like when you smoke the clutch, but the only time I've seen smoke is in 4WD.

I've never actually seen any smoke, but I guess that would be the smell. I'm thinking it's not normal? Is there an issue here or strictly operator error?

(Gearcruncher) Trust me , your theory is 100 % incorrect...It's not theory, I fixed my slave cylinder over two years ago. No problems and no squeal and I don't trust you.

The 6 spd. has a lot of neutral gear noise (a slight whine) you maybe trying to fix some thing you can't. Generally a bad release bearing will make the most amount of noise with light pressure.

You might be right, but my pedal is out of adjustment so I'm doing it more as an experiment. Thanks for your input.

...I forgot to add that I replaced my slave cylinder a few weeks ago because the pedal actuation was not very smooth. The new Beck Arnley unit cured that. I should have adjusted the pedal at that point, and now that I think about it, I don't really notice much TO bearing noise. I'll have to go back out to my truck in a bit. BTW does anyone no where I can get rebuild kit for the old slave cylinder?

I'm glad I found this thread, I just bought the URD stage III clutch kit and am planning on putting it in over Labor Day weekend coming up. No more crappy stock TOB either! I also went ahead and got the Short Shifter from them as well. Anyone else have this kit installed on their trucks?

It is just an upgrade from stock. I was on Black Bear Pass in Telluride, Co this past July. I must say having the clutch slip going around the switch backs was not fun to say the least. 900 ft drop if you F up!

Has anyone ever bypassed the clutch accumulator assembly? Does this make the clutch pedal feel softer? I am just curious because of course I disconnected the line from this and cross threaded when reassembling. I asked Steve (Gadget) at URD where I purchased my clutch. He said they do not use this at all with there twin disc and is not needed for the single disc. I guess I am just looking for another opinion or feedback from someone who has done this. Thanks guys!

Judging by the illustrations for the accumulator and as far as I can tell , all the accumulator does is provide an additional cushion to your clutch pedal feel .
Not sure why Toyota decided to run with an accumulator on a small truck like this ???? I have seen clutch accumulators on tractor trailers .
To answer your question , The clutch should work fine with or without the accumulator

Thanks for the response gearcruncher, I had parts waiting for me at the house yesterday. Had to order some fittings and a 6' steel braided line. Got everything put back together and the truck is driving fine. I am hearing an odd clunking sound every once in a while. Not to sure if this is the clutch seating itself or not. I never heard anything like this before doing the clutch. I had the clutch replaced in my 05 but replaced with all stock parts and never heard this either. When I first took it out for a drive last night it was louder than it was this morning on my drive into work. I have only put maybe 20 miles on the clutch so far. I drive less than 25 miles a day.
