If you have the time and patience , it can be done . I have rebuilt thousands of auto transmissions over the years .
I have a feeling the one way clutch in your transmission has issues . Your one way clutch is not holding for some reason making this an easy rebuild .
All the overhaul manuals are in the link as well as tips , cheats , how to , you tube videos and shift kits
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...sions-write-up-your-4-speed-automatic.325531/

Cost at a shop if you bring them the transmission, not the truck $1500- $2500 depending on circumstances and what warranty you would prefer

Cost to do this at home ?

Banner kit with all the seals and gaskets $120
Locking torque converter $185 . You give them your core .
    One way clutch $65
    Sonax valve body kit $240
possible clutch pack frictions $ 40
Always add $100 for anything else you find
A can of cooling line flush $12
    fresh oil $60
About $ 822 bucks to rebuild your transmission properly at home
Take your time , take hundreds of pictures for re-assembly .
Make a write up for Tacoma World . To this day , nobody has created a write up showing how to rebuild the A340 series transmission
Members here at Tacoma World are dying for an informative write up with pictures

We have valve body write ups like this excellent post
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/sonnax-zip-kit-a340-late-
    installation.435019/#post-14714790

But we dont have an overhaul write up .

Hey , thanks gearcruncher. That's the kinda info I need. I'll probably pull it apart and see how it goes. But it will be a few months before I'll have the time to settle down and tackle it. I have to find another place to live in the next month and get moved. And it will be all me, so it will take me a month after I gains a place. My landlord is a greedy bitch. Been here 12 years and new houses were built on our street and now she thinks she can rent out the house for the same amount. Raising my rent by 45%. So I can't afford it and even if I could I wouldn't pay it. So I don't want to have it torn apart during the move. But when I do , I definitely will take alot of pics and make a post. And will probably have a few questions for you along the way. I had a day off of work today so I pulled the trans out of the 2wheel drive red 4runner and put it in the black one. I got it all buttoned up and almost ready to go. I have to rebuild the starter I'm going to use and fill it up with tranny fluid and she will be done. I didn't get to start till 11 this morning and around 5 I called it quits. I didn't get to eat lunch so I was ready to stop, and plus I have to get the rebuild kit for the starter. So I'll have to wait till Saturday to do that. Then I'll probably start tearing back into that 4wheel drive and pull that tranny and start converting it over to a 5sp. But thanks for your help and reply.

Heck yeah it will, thanks. Just a quick question of reassurance. Will the transfer case off of the 340f work on the r150? All the bolts will line up but it looks kinda sketchy were the two shift forks stick out of the transfer case on the upper side where they fit together? Can u grind them down a little ? Looks like it's a little shallow in the transmission side where they go.

Hmm , to be honest , I always repaired the transmission that came out of the truck , so I have always put the same transfer case back in .
With this being said , I have zero knowledge regarding swaps . This is why I created the write up " swap thread " and the " transfer case " write up as well .
It wont take you long to find your answer mind you . Have a look at the transmission swap thread posted in the links above .I know you will find your answer there

Thanks again. How can you tell the difference between a w59 and a r150. If there are no markings. I have one or the other. It's a 5spd and the hole for the shift fork is on the left side and it looks exactly like my r150. But according to the pic of a w59 that I just looked at, it looks the same also.

It was a transmission I picked up at a salvage yard. All he told me was that it was good and came out of a toyota truck. It was marked v6 on it so I was thinking it was a r150 cause the shift fork hole is on the left like my r150 and not the right like on my 91 truck.

Found it. R150f has 6 bolts and w59 has three main bolts. And starters are on opposite sides. So I have a r150f.

Hey gearcruncher. It's been awhile. But my buddy decided to buy a used transmission off of eBay from Auto wrecking in Oregon. We got the A340f trans in the other day and I installed it yesterday. It does the same thing as the original trans and the one that took out of a wreck he brought. It has a low gear and reverse, but when I put it in Drive u can tell it doesnt engage as hard as it does in low or reverse, and when you give it gas it slips alot and barely starts to go. It shifts just fine while your going. I've adjusted the kick down cable and even adjusted it to really lose to really tight. But could I be doing something wrong or is it just bad luck with 3 bad transmissions? The one we just got was drained of fluid and we replaced the filter and seals but there was some fluid left in the torque converter and when I poured it out it looked like oil, so that wasn't good. I blew out the cooler but could that be the problem causing it , if maybe it's not flowing good?

Well it wasn't a stopped up cooler problem. I was hoping that it could have been stopped up and causing a pressure issue. But no dice. I swapped out the radiator and still same problem. I was just trying anything I could think of because of all 3 transmissions having the same issue. I'm guessing that for this model transmission this is probably the mist common problem? But I'm going to take it back out next weekend and send it back and get his money back. So instead of messing with another auto transmission, we are going to convert it over to a manual.

Ok. Thanks. It's his money. But he does have a doner truck for parts. I'm pretty sure that the only thing we will have to buy is a different ecu and maybe harness. But I think the harness is the same just a few pins will or won't be used. Other than that we might have to do something about the cross brace and drive shafts. But as far as parts we should have everything but the computer. Yeah, I'm not tickled about doing the work because it's a buddy deal and it hasn't paid good so far.
