What if its raining/snowing/swarming locusts? Not everyone has access to a camper, soft topper, or tonneau. I'd much rather have the option to have my long gun safe, dry, and secure in the back seat area of my truck in such a situation.

OP could also live in a rural, farming area. Pig path roads, terraces, humps, and general PITA pasture overgrowth would jostle anything in a vehicle around. Wouldn't want my AR/shotgun/anything bouncing around.. loaded or unloaded. Coyotes have become a problem in some areas of the country. I wouldn't hesitate to keep a gun on hand if I'm checking my grandfather's fields. Wouldn't shoot from the truck, but I'd like to have it at the ready.

get yourself a hard plastic case the right size case laid flat in the bed will fit snug and your wheel wells wont let it slide anywhere . This method works great for my rifle case and bow case.

Nobody cares what you think, maybe they just want to have their AR handy for reasons that are their own business, and right behind the backseat is easily and quickly accessible thank you very much. Are you just going to let a monster buck run off because you cant get to your weapon(on purpose).

Great thread! I’ve been researching for almost a year. I keep coming back to the Rackbone.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
To the main point, it depends where you're driving. The last batch of roads I drove for a week (private ranch) required that the truck basically live in 4lo + 1st gear (sometimes I got to 2nd + 4lo!) for the better part of a week. There were plenty of times a rifle on the back seat would have slid off and bounced around. I don't treat my tools like homecoming queens, but having a zero'd rifle bouncing around isn't good for accuracy. Sure, most production scopes can take a decent amount of abuse, but who wants to take that chance on the buck of a lifetime? I don't. So that means a rack of some sort or a case. Like I think I said earlier, I keep mine on the front seat, muzzle down, nestled into it's soft case to protect the crown, and bolstered with my pack/rolled wool blankets. Empty chamber, 3 in the magazine. I agree that the holders that hang off the seats are a PITA. I bought one, used it once, and got rid of it after watching a very frustrated dog bark at long-gone birds.

'Sporting' is hard to pin down. A lot depends on the personal ethics of the hunter. Rather than wade into that debate, I figure if the hunt doesn't violate any game laws, then it is 'sporting'. There are legal hunts that I personally don't find sporting, but I have no right to criticize. If a guy wants to put some meat in the freezer (who doesn't?) and doesn't break the law to do so, I say to him good luck, God bless, and shoot true.

Same way I roll (with a side arm in addition) behind the seat in a soft case with the end unzipped so I can put it into action as quickly as necessary.I don't even need to flip the seat forward to get my riff. When I reach my hunting zone I am hunting, and ready to hunt. Same way I catch ALL my fish,I am ready to fish when I get to the fishing place and I fish.Just because I may see something on the way to or from camp does not mean I am not a shooter. I strictly follow all game laws,on the first day, or the last 5 minutes of the season.Just for fun look up the deer hunting BS thread.

I have a j-dam guidance module crate that I converted into a 4 gun air tight hard case. I just strap it to the bed.

Thought I might give an update on the ebay behind the seat rack.

Bought it in Nov of 17 and have had anywhere from one to three guns in it. I have not had a single issue with it. It ties around the headrest and a strap around the bottom of the seat. I have slammed on brakes and accelerated hard and the guns barely moved. I've put double barrel 12 gauges, Ar 15's, heavy barrel hunting rifles, and lighter 10/22's. It works great. If you have to go to public places the top two slots firearms can be seen. However the bottom one hides one very well from the general public.

    Hopefully this helps someone!
