What would it take to drop a TRD locking dif in a basic SR?

If not direct drop in compatible, what all will I need to swap or alter.

I’m sure it has been posted but I have not been able to find it.

I have a pretty basic sr Tacoma, 3.5l auto, axel code A07A, 4x4, it’s a work truck for checking wells and oil tanks across the country side.

I have had the truck about a month and today was the first time I have been in the mud. I was not impressed. Found several places I should have never needed 4x4. This truck gets used for work and will see mostly dirt roads and off road.

I'm looking to add a locking rear diff, a coworker totaled a brand new (date code 2/23) trd about 3 months ago and has offered to let me get my hands on his diff for cheap. If his will not work I’ll buy an Eaton e locker.

Requires axle swap or housing modification and custom wiring. Just get an arb or eaton and call it a day

What is it that requires the swap? What exactly is different? The housing? The ring? I’m sure I can get his entire rear end mostly curious what the differnce is.

I already got his shocks and skid plates lol.

Would it be possible to gut and swap all or is the housing to small?

The pumpkin size is small. Need to swap the whole axle. But then you need to deal with the wiring

Have you tried better tires yet? Makes a huge difference over what it comes with stock. You could swap the entire TRD OR rear axle but would have to figure out your own wiring for to engage/disengage the locker. Seems easier to just turn the dial to 4hi rather than mess around adding a locker just to stay in 2hi with the rear locked.

I can wire it providing they didn’t do. One thing goofy like change a speed sensor or, I was thinking just add a hard wire like the Eaton elockers use. On and off.

The factory locker isn't just a simple on/off power source

Yeah today I about didn’t make it out of a couple of the mud holes in 4x4, tires are not bad but they are decent at tires. Same as my dodge that has zero issues on this route.

I assume you are trying to swap with 3rd gen one. You could look into 2nd gen trd trims(2015). Those are 8"..
....never mind. They have 3.72 ratio

The stock E-locker uses pulse width modulation and not simply +12V on and off. Read through the second link I posted. Great info in there
