FSM calls for Denso K20HR-U11 or NGK LFR6C-11 in the 4.0 liter engine. Not saying that Iridiums don't work, just pointing out what's in the FSM.

Did Toyota ever issue a TSB or something similar that validates using Iridiums in the 1GR-FE Tacoma engine?

From the boosted world, IKH's are the recommended plugs with the TRD s/c. It is either IKH20 or 22's that come with it.

The TRD kit comes with IKH22 iridium plugs. That's probably as close to a validation as anyone is going to get. What's in the FSM is usually the bare minimum requirements to keep the engine running in factory specs. It's no different than someone changing out their transmission WS fluid for a Valvoline maxlife fluid or Amsoil. Sometimes, aftermarket products will meet or exceed OEM specs. In the case of iridiums, they will offset the service interval for spark plug changes. Instead of every 30k changes, you can probably go 100k or more, depending on the condition of the plug. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to use low cost solutions and pass the cost to the consumer. Using copper or platinum plugs means you will end up paying more in the long run, assuming you keep your vehicle over multiple service intervals. I paid $45 for a set of 6. Let's say you pay $30 for platinums or $20 for a set of coppers. You will have paid more than me over 3 service intervals. Not to mention the time spent changing them.

Been running Denso Iridium Long-Life SK20HR11 for about 16,000 miles without problems. Didn't notice any improvements, either. I bought them just to stretch out the change intervals longer. :D

Note: if you are running the stock engine with stock tuning, stick with the stock heat range (the number "20" for Densos and "6" for NGKs).

Do have a supercharger with the TRD iridium plugs? Curious to know if you notice the difference, I picked my '04 up recently, supercharged, but I'm 99% sure that the dealer put the basic copper plugs in it when they tuned it up before listing it for sale.

disregard then, I misread. I am debating on which plugs to buy and whether or not one is worth it to get iridium or not versus just getting NGK platinum plugs or even the standards.

I guess my thing is I don't care what the plug costs and considering my mileage I put on it a year I don't mind spending 6-$9 a plug considering I only change them every 2-3 years. At least then they are not just slap worn out and I am still getting the best efficiency out of the motor.

Has anyone had any issues with the platinum or the iridium? I get either buying Denso or NGK.

I've never had issues with iridium plugs over the years. Many super sport bikes use them as well. If they can handle those kinds of Temps, compression ratio, and revs up to 16k rpm, there's nothing they can't handle from a tacoma.

The reason why there are such debates is because it depends on what's best for you and your vehicle. When I was in the 3000gt/stealth turbo crowd, people preferred copper because you could get a hotter spark. The draw back is having to replace those plugs very often. The OEM plugs for those cars and many others are platinum. Not as hot of spark as copper, but far better life. Then there's iridium that has excellent spark and life, better than platinum in both respects. IMO iridiums are the best. Some others will disagree.
