Long time lurker, but first time poster here. I'm in the market for a new 2017 Tacoma and narrowed it down to the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro. But, I'm having a hard time to make a decision on one or the other.

Both Auto, 4x4, fully loaded, they come out to $39,550 and $43,290 respectively. However, here in SOCAL, I can buy a TRDOR for $1-2k under MSRP and the Pro is about $2-3k over MSRP, not to mention extremely rare. The difference could be upwards of a $5-6k between the two.

I know if I buy the TRDOR, I will want to buy wheels/tires, a lift, and the TRD Pro Grill. I'd also eventually want the blacked out headlights and hood on the Pro. The powered leather seats would be nice too but not a deal breaker.

Have any of you purchased one or the other, and regretted it? Or have any thoughts on this? I think if the dealers here weren't selling over MSRP it would be an easier decision. My concern is if I go with the TRDOR that I'll end up spending the difference on aftermarket modifications and still never be the same.

Perhaps I'm overthinking this and will be more than happy with the TRDOR, coming from a 2002 Ford Ranger.

If you can afford the payments, go for the TRD Pro. Since you'll already splurge the time in money modifiying the TRD OR. I'm living with the headache of choosing the Sport over the TRD Pro, though there wasnt any in stock at the time near me. Just my two cents, having dealt with the same issue.

Get what you can afford. I have the OR but if I could afford a PRO, I would have.

    I could afford either.

I bought the OR. It was a better fit to my needs/preferences/wants.

That's really what the OP needs to figure out -- what is important to him and to what degree the Pro provides that the OR doesn't and what the OR provides that the Pro doesn't. Then choose which one is the best fit.

I'm starting to hate all the chrome. But I'm happy. I can't find the PRO for msrp and it would have been a 50k truck after taxes and fees.

The $50k is the major driver and truly not far off OTD. Here's some cost comparisons I came up with. Living in CA, we get hit with a huge sales tax and "price adjustments". I suppose I could live without the headlights and hood which makes the OR much more compelling. Not to mention it's significantly easier to find.

Pro got me to the dealer, but then I realized I'd be lifting it, and needed a longbed for hauling bikes. Problem solved itself.

Those numbers are definitely misleading. You can get them to come off the price on TRD ORs and you will find most TRD Pros above MSRP. So they are probably more like ~35K vs $48+k which is a 10-12K+ swing vs $4k on paper.

I personally dont think the Pro is worth it. You are getting slightly upgraded shocks, leather seats and a lot of gaudy badging, and you lose a sunroof in the process. Is that worth $10-12k?

That's where I'm leaning as well. Off-Road. The sunroof is nice, plus the lack of a hood cowl will help with visibility. I'm planning on keeping the truck 5-7 years so resale is not a huge driver.

I sat in a Limited and the leather felt cheap. I think I could live without that.

Beautiful taco! Very close to what I'd do but with a 5' bed.

Op are you going to upgrade/change suspension? If so buy an off-road

If you're going to leave it basically unchanged get the pro.

If I went with the Pro I'd leave as-is. If I went OR I'd probably add another 1" over the Pro height in the front.

My oppinon get a long bed TRD OR w/premium tech package and spend the extra money you would have spent on the pro modding it exactly the way you like...

If you want the look of a Pro then get a Pro. When it comes to time to trade or sell the Pro with its goodies will 'likely' hold better value than an OR with bolt-on to look like a Pro.

Another option, is go with the OR. Drive it for a couple years, mildly mod. If after that time you still want the Pro, return the OR to stock and trade for a Pro. The ADM will likely not be an issue in a couple years.

Good points, I needed the sunroof, and I put Wet Okole seat covers on so 2 more votes against the Pro.

Now that I see you're in SoCal... you might be better getting an off-road and upgrading the suspension yourself and throwing a pro grill on it.
Dealers here generally charge a fat markup on the pros.
