And that wasn't disagreeing with what @US Marine said. He's right. But you can also achieve that by going to low range.

Your 2019 needs 4600 rpm to give you max torque. That is not a good place to be with a manual transmission. Older vehicles got that torque at 1500-3500 rpm. With this truck you're going to need low range a lot more, especially with the manual. Newer engines were designed around automatic transmissions with torque converters.

    Yes and no.

1st gear hi range can handle most things just fine.

Most of the time just tossing it in low range is a good idea though.

This what low gearing can and will do , this is Corral Canyon OHV park near Campo Calif in the East County of San Diego

In low range at 124:1 gearing literally idling up this hill in 1rst gear scaring all of my Jeep club members . Just moments after this pic was taken the right front tire was 4' off the ground

    This right here.

saw a MT FJ out in the dunes of pismo stuck having all sorts of issues, rode over to him and went are you in 4lo? no? do yourself and your clutch a favor, 4lo. Got him right out.

Seriously if you are MT and are not using 4Low when off road you are dumb. Hell im an auto and if im off road going less than 30mph in varying terrain im exclusively in 4low. Hell im in 4low ANYTIME im in the bigger dunes of pismo, keeps trans temps down, available power at the speeds im going is way better etc etc. 4hi only gets used in the snow/icy roads, higher speeds in the desert (to keep the front and rear axle mechanically mated together so that the rears dont lock under braking) or when i just need a lil bump over an obstacle that 2wd wont be doing nicely.

There’s a 2Lo mod that’s plug and play.... I’m not certain if you can lock the rear though. I need to go check because I have the mod. Now that I think about it, pretty sure you can. The truck thinks it’s in 4 Lo. But the front diff isn’t engaged.

I have the manual transmission and I’m always in 4lo when in any sort of technical terrain where I never need to exceed 30 mph or there abouts. It makes everything easier and is also the only mode that ATRAC is enabled, the rear locker can be engaged, and all the fun police options are disabled by default. 4hi is for only used for snow covered roads. YMMV

That reverse gear is way to high though, but it has been in all my automobiles. Not clear why. Who wants to be barreling along at 10 mph reversing in a parking lot let alone a technical trail or backing up a trailer?

I agree that the lower the gears in the rear diff, the better for off roading. 5.29 gears would make 3rd gen taco with MT, not a very good daily driver. I could see it being good in the city maybe, but on the highway the 4.30 stock gears are already not very fuel efficient. Well they are, if you are going no faster than 65:)

    Awesome photo by the way!

I use 4Hi on lots of just service roads and such where it's mostly graded, washboard, a few rocks, etc.

Especially washboard, 4x4 will really help your rear end from drifting.

    Couldnt have said it better.

I think the high reverse is due to storage of the gears.

But drifting is fun. How else does one have fun on forest roads?

    Thanks !!!

That pic is 25 yrs old

Basically when figuring out axle ratios you have (3) ways to regear ....

Economy gearing ... a slightly taller gear ( bring cruise rpm down by 200rpm ) it's like going up in tire size but your fuel economy increases

Return to stock gearing ..... selecting a gear ratio that with your new larger tires , brings back the stock power level you had with the OEM wheels and tires

Performance gearing ...... selecting a gear ratio (lower gear / high numerically ) that increases cruise rpm by 200 -300rpm . This helps by getting the motor in its powerband faster

All my vehicles I've regeared I've always gone with a performance regear . Yes I'm spinning the motor 200-300rpm at cruise and fuel economy is down slightly but the motor is more responsive

when you go out on trails put it in 4lo, especially on a manual. You can use gears 1-4 for varying levels of reduction. Just stay out of 5th.

Interesting, thank you for the input. You seem to know much more about gearing than i do :)

Honest question, why stay out of 5th? Because its overdrive?

Haha. We have none of that where I live. I would probably have it in 4lo going 5mph on roads like that. :)
