This! You should only pay the sales tax in the state that the car is being registered in regardless where it was purchased. My experience from buying in 3 different out of state dealers in the past:

If financing, the out of state dealer will contact the DMV from your local state to get all the registration fee, plate fees, title fee, and tax percentage which is applied to the out the door price. They send in the paper work to your local state DMV.

If paying cash, they can do the above or they'll give you the title and paperwork work for you to do it yourself (as in you go to DMV pay the fees/tax there).

I had one dealer that was not only rude in not wanting to sell me a car outside of state but said; "if you really want it you need to pay cash and pay our local taxes, and we're not responsible in other taxes in your state."

I just hung up after that comment.

EDIT: My apologies, I'm reading on many other forums/reddit that, only if you drive off the lot, California may be the only state where you pay sales tax in Cali plus the sales tax in the other state where the car will be titled in. A work around would be if the car gets delivered to you via truck then you don't pay California taxes if buying out of state. Though some dealers may not want to sell it that way.

Yeah, that seemed to be the issue since I was driving it off the lot.

Fear not, I didn’t have to pay twice the sales tax. I just paid the difference once I registered in WA.

MSRP on a Solar Octane Pro here in Oregon, January ‘23. $150 DOC, the rest license/taxes, under 1k total, including 4 years of registration. The dealer was adding a $7995 tire/lift package which I didn’t want, had zero need for. They weren’t budging on that but I very politely told them I WOULD buy a SO Pro SOMEWHERE and preferred to buy it locally. They came back with MSRP which I’ve never paid before, but no one else was selling one at that, search as I tried. So, it was MSRP on what I wanted, or wait/see if prices dropped further, and or if supply changes. Many dealers that I talked to in the PNW aren’t selling out of area, so that basically made the decision MSRP or nothing (or just wait). Oregon max Dealer Doc fee is $150 and we don’t have a sales tax but do have a small ‘privilege tax’ which is a tad under 1%. They did try to stuff a VIN etch on me but a sales manager I know printed out a total cost sheet so I could bring in a bank check as they would not take a personal check or any portion on a card.
I paid cash so that likely didn’t help me with the dealers that asked “what are you trading”, I sold that back in November to a fellow out of Tucson AZ, a TRD, wheeled, tired, lifted and well modded ‘21 DCSB OR which I owned outright and that brought almost enough to cover entire cost of the Pro upgrade.
One thing that ‘we’ all need to be watchful of when trading is undervaluing of a trade in. It’s a pretty common game, especially by those who sell at “MSRP”. 3K under actual value on a trade in is the same as a 3K additional dealer markup. Most of us are savvy to that, but those dealers can be pretty sneaky!
I did notice the base MSRP had gone up $500 from my truck to ones coming in now, and those kind of incremental increases will likely continue.

Good point, but when you say most of us, I would say that “most” fall into the trap of you’re always going to get taken to the cleaners on the trade-in. Does not have to be the case and like you’re saying, keep in mind the bottom line. Most dealers work straight off kbb or at least they used to. I would start negotiations at private party value for my trade in.

If I were trading, I’d shop my trade to dealers, not pot lots, but reputable (ha!) dealers, and there are some out there. Go find out what they’d real-deal write a check for to outright buy it -and I’m not saying just Carmax or the like. What someone will write a check for is what it’s really worth. Get a solid bid by having them look at it, drive it etc. and if the trading dealer won’t pay that, set up an outright purchase and go sell it to them. It’s going to take a bit more work, but we are talking our own hard earned here, and it’s worth the work put in. The book - KBB, etc. is changing rapidly these days so it has to be done pretty close to buy time. Sometimes the most value is gained in education! Don’t want the education? Don’t gripe over what you might could have gotten, or how much you THINK the dealer didn’t pay you. :)

Yup, true. And I haven’t looked, but is Carvana still doing the crazy stuff they were doing? Haven’t heard much lately. But that was a real option for a while.

Their genius model of overpaying for vehicles site unseen seems to be failing. Who could have seen that coming?

Smart time to walk into a dealership. They probably needed one more sale to hit a sales goal and get that bonus check.

Paid MSRP at my local dealer. Had placed a deposit for a PRO 6MT when they used to come in Lunar Rock. All Pro received since then were either the wrong transmission or wrong color. I bought a 23 Lunar Rock Tundra in Nov 22 from as I needed a truck before peak fall. Then my Pro SO 6MT gets allocated to the dealership. Traded the 23 Tundra for the 23 Pro SO 6MT. Love it!

The explanation I was provided was that in the Midwest we simply do not receive that many 6MTs and that seems to be have been true for the last two years. For my 2019, I literally walked one day into the local dealership and walked out with my 6MTOR at 6K off MSRP. I regretted trading that for a GMC Denali late 2020 and wanted another 6MT since then. However, the chip shortage hit, and none of the dealers around me that do not charge a markup received a 6MT Pro in Black, MGM or the special color for two years (I did not want one in white with the paint issues)! If the 6MT does indeed go away for MY24 I would consider myself to be extremely fortunate!

My dealer who was good to me on my 23 sport but couldn’t guarantee I’d ever see a Pro was going to give me 25k for a 2017 ZR2 w 46 k. While I was waiting for delivery I got curious and Carvana web site said 30 k ! That’s a profit of 3 k when you factor in 2 k tax savings if I traded in. So I did it without telling dealer Check cleared in 24 hrs. I highly recommend Carvana. Was painless. My dealer was ok about it but I could tell wished I called him first.
