Greetings, I'm in the market for a first gen Tacoma. I've test-driven a number of 4WD models but have a question about the "TRD" designation. What research I've done said it's an option that includes a locking rear diff. Is that true, and is it true of Pre-Runners and 4WD trucks both? Should they all have an electric locking diff switch on the dash, left of the steering wheel? One '04 4WD I test-drove today had TRD stickers but no locking diff switch.

All true TRD's have a auto locking rear diff. It's possible that the previous owner put a TRD badge on for the hell of it. If it doesn't have that button, then it doesn't have the TRD options installed.

I'm fairly sure that Pre-runners have an auto locking rear diff. Not positive though, I'm sure someone else can confirm.

The TRD off road Prerunners have the electric locking rear diff. The TRD Sport Prerunners have an LSD. :)

The Sport came out in '05 (2nd generation). My friend has a '02 PreRunner TRD Off Road and yes it has the e-lock rear diff.

Prerunners don't have locking diff. I could have used it a couple of times
