Canada = no off-road long bed

So i bought a trd sport insteed, i don't really need crawl control and got the scoop that i kind of like better than the plain flat boring hood of the off-road.

You need to do compomise in life, long bed over crawl control

I bought the OR with tech and premium because I wanted the most bang for the buck. I then grabbed the only thing missing-the scoop hood. I can now crawl, look cool and show off my colored bumpers. Oh, all without glare because I also purchased the right color. :bananadance::benchpress:

I plan on adding lockers when I regear. I just needed the long bed double cab more than I needed lockers lol.

So I have a Premium+Tech Sport with a manual. A truck just as loaded as the Limited for a few g's less than an Off-Road? Sounds good to me. The Sport has a "sport-tuned" suspension and bigger sway bars which allow it to handle and corner better than the other models. The only thing that's missing between the Sport and the Off-Road is the locker, and the Bilsteins that come with the Off-Road make for a softer ride. There's no height difference. Everything beyond it is identical in terms of performance. The only difference is appearance. I think the Sport is the real winner in the looks department until you shell out $44k for a Pro.

The short bed versus the long bed is a vehicle length difference of 13.2 inches (33.5 cm for my friends up north). I would have to eliminate the workbench (not something I want to give up) to get a long bed in the garage. One reason not presented in the previous posts for getting a short bed versus a long bed is garage fit. I need the double cab for times we go with another couple to dinner or whatever, so access cab isn't an option for me.

Now onto OR versus Sport. I do enjoy the mountains and deserts of the southwestern parts of the US and the beautiful mountains, lakes and forests of British Columbia. Ouray Colorado trails are amazing for their beauty and ruggedness, and Moab for the backcountry solitude. Less than 1% of my total annual miles is off roading, but the confidence of knowing a rear-locker will bring you home without spinning tires is worth the selection of the TRD Off Road over the TRD Sport and Limited, at least for me.

I think the necessity for a rear locker is a bit dramatized, personally.

I feel like choosing a good path and knowing your truck goes a lot farther than a rear locker. It’s really there for certain situations and I’m willing to put some money down saying that maybe 10% of OR owners really need a rear locker for their wheeling terrain.

In my view, a Sport is just that. Intended for people who engage in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hauling dirt bikes etc, and not so much for off roading for the sake of it or extreme overlanding. True the Sport won't go places and OR will, but it will get you down a dirt road to your hunting place, or on the beach. Equipped with the same tires, don't see much difference between Sport and OR on snow, absent the possibility a locker might get you unstuck in 24" snow. It does handle better on the street (subjective) so if a lot of your driving is on pavement it's not a bad choice. Most other truck mfgs also offer a version of the Sport configuration and probably for the same reasoning.

The Sport and Off Road have the exact same price if they are equally equipped.

I wheel on some reasonably challenging trails in the Rockies often. I’ve NEVER engaged my locker. Had the Bitch sideways on boulders, and my windshield filled with nothing but blue sky, still never used the locker.

You can still get the sunglass holder! But you have to elect for a manual tranny

I can't believe we still have the Sport vs OR discussions. Y'aa should have bought the SR5! Here's why ...
The Sport scoop. Pretty cool but don't need it.
The OR locker. Kind of cool, but wouldn't use it.
The $3000 SR5 savings (2017 prices). VERY cool. Everyone can use money!!!
And with an SR5 you get an actual ignition key , a black grill (vs 2017 cheese grater), amber DRLs , and that 4x4 emblem (no stickers). Old School!!!
I could go on, but 3 grand in your pocket says it all.
Truthfully I like them all. From the SR to the PRO.

Had SR5 SB dont get Led drl, no side mirror directionals, smaller screen radio... went sport, had the White DCLB I wanted ,will most likely never go off road but need 4x4 for New England winters...liked the look of my fake scoop over plain hood. And I got my Truck for about the price of an SR5 .In perfect world Toyota would combine the 2 and call it TRD sport off road at the same msrp
