Hi there, I need advice and suggestions on how to proceed in handling an emergency overseas.

My girlfriend's mom is visiting Germany in the Rudeshiem and Wiesbaden area. She just got sick over there and had gotten pneumonia. I don't have much info as of right now and so far all I know is that she now has water in her lungs.

The hospital she's in won't take her insurance (Tricare) and currently an overnight stay is $1,000. I was told the nearest military hospital is about 3 hours away. I don't know which hospital it is but the family was told that they only take wounded veterans and they might not even admit her.

My girlfriend's dad is thinking of flying over there to take her to a military base himself or flying her back home but one of their worries is if she'd even be healthy or strong enough to make the flight back home.

Has anyone here ever experienced something similar overseas or served in a military hospital overseas? The family is figuring out their next move but I'm hoping for some additional input on the matter.

    Thanks in advance!

Call Tricare. They will probably reimburse on the backend but don’t think they’ll cover up front.

Sent a PM. For those in similar situation it all depends on what plan you are on. 1-800-748-7347 is the main number to call for Tricare when dealing with these things. Not all providers accept tricare, even here in the states. When these things come up, sometimes we have to pay up front, unless its close to post then they are usually familiar with the process more. I.E. on a cruise had to pay $500 and then was refunded eventually.

Landstuhl would not let a dependent with Pnemonia get worse on their doorstep.

She just texted me that based on her dad’s benefits they will only cover Landstuhl.

I’ll post more info as I get them. I’ve been sending her screencaps of your suggestions. Thanks a lot you guys.

Good news! My girlfriend's mom is doing better. She is receiving antibiotics via IV three times a day. She has breathing treatments that loosen up any mucus or phlegm, still doing assisted breathing with oxygen and she's now able to walk around, eat and talk. Turns out she was bedridden this past week but my girlfriend's sister didn't want everyone to worry so she didn't tell the family right away. They're still going to try and bring her to Landstuhl so that insurance wise she'll still be covered.

My girlfriend also told me the Tacoma World community is awesome.

    Thanks again guys!

Just got word that she'll be released this Saturday. She ended up staying where she's at instead of going to Landstuhl. She was already comfortable there and my girlfriend's dad didn't want to disturb her and have her travel somewhere else.

My girlfriend and her family are thankful for everyone's advice.
