There's room for I6s and V8s in these trucks (and 4Runners while we're at it). The 2TR should make more power and be more responsive with its already generous intake, large exhaust, high-compression and, as well, 4.30 gears in the axle(s). Imagine if Toyota turbocharged it?

The methods to develop power may have advanced, I haven't advanced - remain mired in the late '50's and early '60's.

Toyota has used the 2tr in the HiAce commuter bus and the Coaster too if I am not mistaken. It may not get you there as quickly as the 4.0, but it will get you there reliably.
If you have ever looked at the Hilux on the Australian site you will have seen that the 2tr-fe and R155F transmission were rated to pull 5000 lbs, same as the V6. Since all 4WD Tacomas share the same suspension, brakes and cooling system I have always felt confident pulling up to 3000lbs. I may have to downshift on steep grades, but I still pass many semis.

What do the v6 boys get? It does feel like different gearing to me compared to my old 2016 v6.

Took a trip last month with the pathetically underpowered 2.7 the entire length of the Blue Ridge Drive and through the Smokies. Had no problem at all towing it.
