IMG_0085.jpg I just bought a new browning x-bolt hells canyon speed in 300 WSM. I mounted a new Swavroski Z5 3.5-18x44. I tried to sight my rifle today and could not get a tight group. My mounts and scope were tightened with loc tight. I am also shooting off a Caldwell shooting test. I would appreciate any help. Above was my group at 100 yards!

Which kind of shooting rest, does it support the rifle at the front and rear? Are you used to shooting rifles with a decent amount of recoil and not flinching or jerking anticipating the recoil? Basic fundamentals are sound and you've had nice tight groups with other rifles? Have you tried more than one type of ammo?

So to be clear these are four shots and no adjustments made? (I see stickers cover other shots) What ammo are you using? Are you a left handed or right shooter? How is your trigger control?

It supports the front and rear, I know I'm not flinching, and yes I have another hunting (270 WSM) rifle that shoots tight groups. I've only tried one kind of ammo. Can it be the bullet weight ? Could it be the Im just letting the rifle just sit on the shooting rest with out putting any time of pressure on it ?

Is your scope crosshair level to the rifle scope base?

Yes it was 4 shoots with my adjustment . I am a right handed shooter. I think I have pretty decent trigger control. I've had lots of firearm training and certifications, through my work.

Could it be a that I leave the rifle just laying on the rest and don't hold it when I shoot? And no weights on my shooting rest.

When I've used those type of rests that cradle the front and back of the rifle I still try to hold the rifle with the same firmness I would without the rest, otherwise the rifle is free to shift with the recoil when fired and can give unpredictable results. Maybe give that a shot and see if it improves the grouping before buying another box of ammo.

Yes we need to be sure there are no positional changes after each shot.
Bullet weight and barrel twist do play a role however your group is wide for that at only 100 yd. improve your rest set up with sand bags. Other than that try another Weight, try another brand. That is a very capable long range flat shooting round.

Shoulder the butt of the rest as if it were the rifle's butt and position your supporting hand underneath like normal and apply rearward pressure, pulling the butt into your shoulder.

Make sure there is no pressure on the barrel by the forend of the stock. I have a Browning and had to get a gunsmith float the barrel. It was touching the forend of stock at the end.

Yes I was thinking that might be the problem because the rifle moves a lot after every shot without me holding it down.

No I'm not putting pressure at all.
