Truck Randomly dead-not alternator or battery

So, my Tacoma was performing as normal coming home from work. I stopped in to fill up the tank, got back in the truck, turned the key and nothing. Everything was completely dead. I was able to get a jump from a Suburban. Had the alternator and the battery tested and both were good. It has started four times since then (same day).

That's where the mystery begins. Would like to get this fixed so I'm not stranded again.

What do you think? Computer? Replacing the battery cables (that can corrode)?

Any experiences out there?

What noise's does it make when it starts not wanting to crank, if any.

 

if everything was completely dead, it may be that one of the battery cables was loose and when you had it jumped, you moved the cables enough to where they were in contact again...or i could be way off, who know

 

If you don't hear a click, the ignition switch circuit is suspect. Check the cables for the starter solenoid. Check grounds, check to see the solenoid is getting 12v when it is having the problem.
Does it only do it after running to operating temp? If so, it's probably a heat related cause: solenoid windings goind bad.
Keep a very close eye on the details of when, where, etc.

 

Start carrying a jump box with you till you figure it out

 

None. Everything is normal, which is, the way it sounded since day 2000. Smooth~

 

Yeah, good idea. I may need to replace the battery as well. Even though it supposedly charged.

 

Pull the cables, and see if you have any corrosion. Mine tend to corrode under the clamp, where it is hard to see. If the battery has cells, see if they need water. I had an autozone battery that would get low on water, test fine, and not work at the most inopportune time. Check the ground on the firewall for corrosion, and check the connection on the starter as well.

 

I replaced the battery and put some electrical compound in between all the connections attaching to the terminal. One of the problems was the nut on the terminal would continuously loosen.

 

Corrosion is the most common problem. Also check the grounds to the frame and between the frame and engine block.
