Truck Shaking--Cylinder Problem?

Start by working simple to complex. Clean the MAF. check ALL vacuum lines for cracks or pinches, replace any that are suspect. Then it gets tough. O2 sensor, IAC, EGR, INJECTORS, EFI RELAY, Wiring harness, or engine trouble. Try a compression test and possibly a leak-down test to check for valve problems; If the MAF and vacuum doesn't solve it, especially since you already replaced the plugs and coil packs. Start at the basic and go from there. Download the oem service manual to help.

alright breaking my lurker ways to come give my experience. MY 96 with 210k miles started getting "random misfire" I think cylinder 5. was sitting at a stop light and the car started rocking, rpm dropped, gas smell, check engine light, lose of power. definitely a dead cylinder so we pull the code and what do you know. car displays every sign of it being a coil pack issue come on this forum and see that its a common thing so I decide I will order a pack, however at the time I didn't have the money to buy a quality pack that I knew would last so I lived with it. cel would come and go but that code would always be in the background and the car never ran remotely close to smooth, but then one day I'm browsing my local auto parts store when my girlfriend is just reading all the different fuel additives to pass the time for her. she comes a crossed a can that says it will make her car run smoother and suggests buying it to which I tell her if we are going to try that we should use seafoam since it is known to work wonderfully. So what the heck the truck is on its last leg and the bottle is 7 bucks. ran half the bottle through an intake line directly into the manifold (warning don't pour too fast if you notice rpm dropping heavily slow down) your truck will puff giant clouds of smoke and your neighbors if they as nosy as mine will come over to see what's wrong. This will probably cause the truck to throw more misfire codes if you poured quickly, but you can just clear those and they will go away. now that you have put half the can directly into the engine pour the other half into your gas tank. Let the engine idle until no more smoke is blowing out your tailpipe may take a few minutes. Now clear those misfire codes and see how your truck runs. My truck stopped misfiring and was so smoothe I had to make sure it hadn't died a couple times. engine felt stronger than it ever had in my entire ownership of the car and it was like my truck which I was about to sell was brand new again. So I suggest if you think you have a coil issue or if you have any misfire try seafoam first .

TLDR; If you have a misfire issue it could be due to build up in your engine over a large number of miles. Treat engine with seafoam by pouring half the can into a vacuum line on the manifold (brake booster works great) and then pour the other half into your gas tank once the smoking stops coming from your tailpipe at idle.

I hope this works for some of yall like it did for me because I fell in love with this truck all over again.

 

Hmmmmmm, Seafoam employee?? Hahaha ... Rather drastic if you ask me. But what do I know? (Not much about engines)

 

haha yea it does sound as if I work for them, however I will assure you I am just a broke college kid that would rather spend 7 bucks then 50

 

I have tried seafoam, and it isn't for me. I do run it through the gas in my zero turn mower occasionally and it does tend to help. I also used to to clean the TB on my tacoma when I pulled the motor for a rebuild (litter poured it on the TB and scrubbed). I know some guys that swear by it, I also know guys who are convinced it caused their motor issues. Regularly scheduled maintenance goes a LONG way in keeping a motor running in tip top shape.

 

I agree nothing can beat proper maintenance and I understand that it isn't for everyone. It can in fact cause motor issues if you add it to quickly and too closely to the actually inlets of the engine. still a liquid and can still cause hydrolock if you go crazy that's why it isn't advised for diesels to add it into their intake manifold. I just think its a good idea to at least try it conservatively if your motor is acting up

 

Mine always does (with its impossible to fix #@!!*#$!!!!! 2 cylinder misfire). In fact, after it was last cleared, it even flashed (while under load always) for a good amount of time, went away, then when I used my friends Actron scanner that night to see if it was a different issue, it said NO CODES! What in the heck? This truck is weird. It must be something electrical, although my radio stations and clock have not been effected, so who knows.

 

I've never seen my check engine light flash so I can't help ya there :/

 

You could also decarbonize the cylinders with water. And use Techron concentrate for fuel system cleaning. Sea foam only blows smoke because of the chemicals and makes you think it's working. It's not... It's all literally smoke and mirrors

 

No Miss.....just pulled breather box off and found rub through on coil pack wire .
