just jumped in and it started up ran for about 1 min then stalled out. Will not start back up just stumbles when I try to. The last time I drove it a week ago everything was fine no issues at all. I hooked up my code reader and no codes are present. I have no idea what the issue could be. It's a 1998 with 2.7 145000 mi. Does anyone have an idea? Need to get to work tomorrow

right off the two things I can think off that go out like that would be the ECM or the MAF sensor, both of which would disable the truck.

that said, it could be anything as simple as an ignition fuse is blown or a weak battery because it wont start with a weak battery

The battery is cranking strong so I don't think that's it. I was thinking fuel aswell. I never payed attention but can you normally hear the fuel pump prime on these trucks? When I turn the key I don't hear anything prime but I never payed attention to it before. I just let it sit a while and tried again and it started and dean rough for about 30 seconds then died again

the fuel pump only runs as you turn the engine over so its hard to tell but the pump could be bad or the fuse for it went out.

what you describe does sound fuel related, break loose the fuel line fitting on drivers wheel well hump going to the fuel filter and turn the engine over and it should be pumping fuel, if not (assuming the fuse is good and your sure its getting power) then you need to drop the tank and check the fuel pump.

if its pumping gas then do this mod: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/diy-2-4l-2-7l-fuel-filter-relocation-mod.349406/

now if you still have issues after doing that then you need to check fuel pressures and start troubleshooting the fuel system pressure regulator controls by following the factory service manual instructions (see sticky threads if you need to download it)

Well I had some time to mess around with the truck this afternoon. Kind of flabbergasted with what I found. I unhooked the line to the fuel filter above the driverside wheel well and cranked the truck to see if I was getting pressure and I sure was. This is what came out though. I can't figure how to load a picture from my phone.

Would people have access to your truck if they wanted to put something in your fuel?

Is that pretty fresh gas or has it been sitting for a while?

I filled the truck on June 1st and drove it home and it was sitting since then. I have the statement on my online banking and luckily I have an app that keeps track of all my fill ups and maintenance. But the truck has the locking gas door and it's not broken or anything so I don't see how it could have been sabotaged. And I only have 1 key and its on my ring on me all the time

That's a lot of water. Did you get all of it out. Once you get it running, it will be fine. Gonna run like crap until the water is gone.

No I only got what you see in the picture as I was just trying to check for pressure and not have it spray on the engine so I was catching it in the water bottles. I just don't understand how this could have happened. What is my best bet for getting it all out. I was hoping to be able to do it some how with out having to drop the tank one because it is full two because I live in the wonderful rust belt ny. And I don't want to open a can of worms where everything will start braking as I take it apart. I had my bed off before winter so maybe that will be easier then dropping the tank?

Get some more hose and run it to an empty gas can. Pump it out like you just did. Water sits at the bottom. Seeing how you are getting some gas with the water, much of the water is already out. It may actually start without doing the above. It will run rough.

Ok can I take one of the leads of the starter so just the fuel pump will run when Turing the key or does the motor have to be turning over for the pump to run. I just don't want to burn the starter up next.

Drained my entire tank today. Pulled the starter relay and just used the fuel pump to pump it out. Took about 20 min. Then put another 5 gal. In and drained it again. Brought it to the gas station and refilled it and put dry gas in. Seems to be running better now.

Did it rain the week before the problem started? I'm just wondering if it's possible you have a hole in the top of the gas tank and somehow rain water was able to flow in. Or maybe you just had an accumulation of condensation over time and it finally reached a level where the fuel pump was sucking it in.
