Once you turn it back on, it stays on the next time the truck is started...at least mine does. If you turn it off, and then turn off the truck, it remains off the next time the truck is started.

Quoting my own post as an update...

Upon closer examination of my sensor, there does indeed seem to be some sort of foam liner behind or around the inside pocket (facing the front of the truck) of the sensor. Nothing outside that’s easily visible. So I retract my snark at the dealer over that much of it.
Seems to me, they did the TSB work and then told me not to use it. Smh. Just some weird shit on Toyota’s part, all the way around.

I wonder if that sticker’s text was mandated by Toyota or drawn up by the individual dealership.

If Toyota is the source of the sticker there’s no reason any dealership should not be doing the same with the recall. And then if the sticker ‘falls off’ the next day then it’s on you not them.

Don’t really know. Didn’t seem like a cheap sticker...it just wasn’t installed firmly enough to take hold and stay put ;)

It just keeps getting better. After re-reading the wording on my previous post showing the sticker that ‘fell off’, I noticed the sticker referred to the owners manual. How in the world would my owners manual refer to something like this you ask?
    D893041B-FBBA-43A7-9C9F-B930A53F9A49.jpg

They went through my glovebox, dug out the owners manual, and put this silly piece of paper in the TSS section, and put everything back in, nice and tidy. Didn’t even know they were in there.
Need to get a big purple rubber dick, and slather it up with something gooey, and keep it on top of the owners manual from now on...just for fun.

My OR has a dealer installed pro grille with the garnish. I negotiated that it was included and installed when I bought the truck new. The dealer calibrated it at that time. No problems with sensors ever, and they said they did the recall at my last service but I don’t see any differences like the foam pad on top of mine. I haven’t noticed any differences in functioning with it since then either.

I’m thinking the foam is between the sensor and the garnish on the Pro grilles, and just over the sensor on the non-Pro grilles.

Pretty weird (and shady) that they updated your owner’s manual without telling you. Kind of defeats the point.

My dealer sells new Tacomas with lift kits and bigger tires all the time. Offered to install a lift kit on mine before I even drove it off the showroom floor. Wonder how they get around recalls like this when they did the non stock mod.;)

Yes. The foam is between the sensor and the garnish on the Pro Grilles.

Show them the owners manual "update" pictured above and ask them if they themselves or Toyota Corp is on the hook if something happens if the TSS fails.

This mess is gonna get cleaned up at some point. And the result is gonna be that if you've done anything at all to your truck that's not approved by Toyota... you're on your own if it fails. I don't see any other way to deal with this from a corporate standpoint (not that it makes me happy).

I'll just take mine out beforehand. I'll confront them about it if they try and give me any stick about it while picking it up. Or they deny my recall and be done with it. Either way, I'm not playing their games. Haha

Been following this thread for some time. Really wanted to avoid swapping my grille back and avoid the hassle.

I happened to lock my glove before I sent it in, brought my truck in for the recall. They did it no questions asked. Went through my glove again, no insert.

I didn’t go to my home dealer to be safe, but may switch to this new one because of the no hassle approach. They even complimented my grille and mods on the way out after pick up.

I just brought in and picked up my truck today. Slight lift, bigger tires, and Pro grille. No sticker and no shit from the dealer. My guess is some managers at certain dealerships believes this will protect them from liability.

Pretty interesting data point. I just don’t understand how it’s gotten to this point where individual dealerships are making their own decisions about how to work this recall. If you follow the logic in your conclusion, it means the dealerships acting like the one you dealt with may be leaving their asses hanging in the legal wind. The whole thing is weird. I mean, this is a recall...I’m surprised anyone is willing to be flexible about the way they handle it.

It kinda makes sense. If dealers ignore the fact you have aftermarket items, Toyota won't know it unless they require pictures.

If 4 years later someone gets into an accident and for some reason (who would actually do this?) sues the dealer, then whoops, it must been some $10/hr oil change kid who didn't read that you can't add foam to a sensor on a car with bigger tires. And that kid no longer works there anyway, easy mistake, he wasn't trained to even know tires came in more than 1 size.....

At the end of the day, it prevents customers getting pissed at dealers who are caught between a rock and a hard place. I'm glad I'm not a dealer, or I'd screw myself by saying I would just ignore that part of the recall too if I could.

[QUOTE="He said he would not be comfortable doing the recall unless everything was stock as he does not want any liability coming back on him or the dealerships. I cannot blame him. I scheduled the recall before this was an option so when I brought in my truck I changed out the grille and then switched it back after the recall was done.[/QUOTE]

Toyota needs to let us buy the damn Fox Pro's and grill then. There should be no damn problem with us running them with the TSS system. Such garbage from a brand I admired.
