I think that thread is done for. Too bad. The fab work was good.

I have so much hate for photobucket. They completely turned their back on the online community for greed. Everyone needs to transplant their pics to another site and let them go out of business, turn our back on them.

Since no one on CT want's to discuss, what are yall's thoughts on Kurt's build? He's going forged rods and pistons at 10:1 CR on e85. For some reason he thinks he can make more boost than he is now which is around 15 psi. No head work what so ever. I'm kinda scratching my head on this one.

doesn't the 2.7 already have those?

Don't think so, but at any rate he is upgrading them.

Pretty sure the rods and pistons would allow him to crank up the boost maybe around 20-25 assuming he upgrades his gasket? I think most of the valve train upgrades are usually to handle more aggressive cams and higher rpm no?

I need to glance at his build again. I think he going to need some valve spring upgrades for head work. He's probably testing the limits of them first.

The amount of boost you can run is restricted to detonation or indirectly fuel octane as far as I know which is why I'm confused. There will be some small gains from the pistons themselves as I'm sure they have a nicer finish/better design to resist detonation slightly better than stock but not a huge amount. Maybe the stronger rods can just withstand a high amount of detonation and the idea is to just power through it..?

what kind of numbers is he currently making at 15 psi? I imagine that thing has to be a monster for what it is already right?

From what I understand rods fail primarily to high engine speed and secondarily to detonation. So if you upgrade rods you should upgrade engine speed as well. It seems like he's upgrading rods just because. I suppose it would increase the safety margin when you're pushing against the knock limit.

    He's claiming near 350 whp on e85.

3rz rods aren’t forged from factory so he’s definitely improving I think the other thing is him running e85 which significantly lowers chance for detonation

    op of @MrCrowntown build page

As you can tell from the thick 'parting line' on the stock crank and stock rods, they are forged. They will get put back to use with a set of +.020 hyper-eutectic pistons from LCE

sooo stock rods are forged on the 2tr??? which is what kurt has which is why I asked what I asked earlier... I'm missing something right?

I just think he's leaving shit tons of power on the table by not increasing rpms, especially because I know he won't be able to add more boost since he is most certainly at the knock limit now at 15 psi and 9.5 CR on e85.

The term 'forged' can be applied to anything that is squished into shape, regardless of what material is being used.

The rods are forged in the 3rz, but are made up of a shitty alloy and will bend before touching 400. The crank is also forged, but is made up of a much stronger alloy and is capable of well over 1k HP.

The pistons are hypereutectic and should be replaced immediately if you want reliable power up to 400.

Forged maybe but they still look a little paltry. I think the one's Kurt upgraded to are H-beam. Do you know if he is upgrading to arp rod bolts?

Yup, drop forged. But, still a shitty alloy. Seen pics from my thai friend of rods sticking out the side of a block when approaching 400
