It definitely leaves me wanting more. Feels slower for sure than the turbo. Also, like you said, the ecu has a harder time adjusting. With the turbo in the old truck I never pinged or ran crazy AFR’s. With the s/c, it pings at only a few psi and when it goes open loop it runs mid 10’s and bogs from the richness. That’s at barely 5.5psi. I recently bought a used maf calibrator to try and see if I can lean out some of the fuel in open loop before I decide for sure to go turbo. So far though, I like the turbo setup significantly more

It's the strangest thing isn't it. I've got larger injectors, a huge fuel pump, boost referenced FPR (not an FMU tho) and I cannot keep it from running lean and pinging even at 1-2psi. Like what's up with that, and it isn't even easy to for me to get it into open loop and when I do it does exactly what you said and goes dead rich. Even dead rich pushing 5psi or so it cannot seem to advance the timing beyond 9.5 to 10. So I guess you have to be gradual like a turbo to get the thing to respond okay and ideally just go standalone to eliminate all the boos related issues.

I totally understand what you’re experiencing. It’s weird because with the turbo and the same pink tops and fuel pump I wouldn’t ping ever and would get the AFR’s down to low 12’s on the stock ecu. Pulled hard as eff compared to the s/c. Maybe it is because of the gradual build up of boost like you said. That’s why I’m interested to see how the turbo set up responds with the smaller turbine housing by getting more boost under 3k rpm somewhat similar to the s/c.

I also still have the Megasquirt 3 as well. I’ve thought about selling it but I also think about just using it and tuning it. It’s mostly already set up. I just need to get the idle control on it figured out....

You could maybe sell it to me, if you show me which one it is first.

Mine might of been setup related. Apparently long periods of rough idling can screw up the relationship of crankcase pressure to exhaust gasses. I’m going to put in a vented catch can and clean the turbo and see from there how it goes.

The eBay was suppose to give me an idea how to size a turbo on my truck for dirt. Also help with setting up the truck for boost. Was confusing to take something na and make it handle boost nicely. Rather ruin something cheap at first while I was learning.

You’re probably going have to upgrade the ecu right? I thought pre 97 didn’t like boost

Only pre 97 for 6cyl is cited as incompatible with boost. But yeah on the whole all first gen ECUs really shouldn't be allowed to handle boost on their own. They're very simple ECUs and unless you're in open loop they seek stoich which isn't particularly helpful with boost. I'm leaving mine in there like you but a Haltech 1500 is going to run the show. I looked at using a MS3Pro but the support seems lesser, I'd be on my own for 90% of the setup and initial tuning and the price is the same once you encounter the first one with knock control.

is there a reason you are going to leave the stock ecu in the truck? the Haltech is more than capable of running every system in a 97

I just want my dorky stock gauges and in WA you have to pass an OBD scan to stay registered so might as well leave the dumb old ecu in there thinking everything is working right. I'll let the Haltech run everything though, right down to the AC idle up. My year doesn't have emissions anything besides the O2 monitor for CAT
