i had both sides to a catch can, then vented out to atmosphere

 

I’ve seen them tied into the exhaust ahead of a cat if you still have it. Tied in at a 45* or sharper angle and the exhaust gasses kind of pull the crankcase vent as well.

 

WHAT? That’s a terrible idea.

 

With an Air/Oil Separator, what happens with the vapor/water? It goes into the intake?

 

This actually works well. The exhaust pulls a vacuum when tied in correctly.

 

So post sensors and before cat? Wouldn't the oil accumulate in the cat?

 

It’s still just vapor that is passing though so I believe is just will burn through there. I’m cat less but plan to trybit eventually

It depends on the setup. Some route to the intake pre-turbo and others vent to atmosphere.

For the WRX, IAG Performance recommends recirculation for under 600hp running e85 to help pull ethanol vapor from the crankcase, and atmospheric vent for everything else. For over 600hp on e85, they recommend 1500-2000 mile oil changes because of oil dilution due to ethanol vapor buildup in the crankcase.

 

Beat me to it. Knew a guy with a turbo 1GR who had his in this fashion. Worked flawlessly. Simple fluid dynamics at its finest.

 

So the AOS seems same as a catch can but with more baffles to get more oil out the air, with the option to add coolant lines to help sludge from accumulating within the AOS due to water. I still don't understand where the fuel goes, oil or air- I'm thinking oil, so then what's the point of having it.

 

Blow-by pressure relief, and gunked up intake tracts caused by the oil vapor.

 

Obviously, I mean what's the point of have an AOS vice simple catch can if the blow-by fuel will remain in the oil

An AOS is heated by coolant which drives fuel/water vapor off of the oil vapor before returning the oil to the sump. The fuel/water is sucked through the intake and burned or vented to atmo. A catch can just catches everything (oil/water/fuel vapor) and holds it until you dump it.

 

OK that's what I was waiting to hear, thanks I'll likely go with one of these, I don't want to have to keep emptying a can

 

I just empty the catch can on my truck when I do my oil change. I'm sure there would be more blow by with a turbo setup, but it shouldn't be exponentially more. I only catch maybe an ounce or two in 5k miles currently.

 

I just leave the little drain screw off on my catch can... a small drop of oil drips on my frame every now and then...

 

I don't have a drain screw/plug. The whole body unscrews from the cap on mine.

 

Never will it rust.
