    Wait, you left them in place, but removed the chain?

    The reason that LCE made the balance shaft delete kit, is even though the balance shaft is in the bearings, it allows too much oil to pour out, because there is no hydrostatic wedge being produced by the rotation of the shaft to keep the oil pressure up. There will also be an excess of oil leaking out through the tensioner that is now fully extended because of the lack of the chain.

    That is how the rod came through my friends block.

    Sorry.. you did so much assembly already.

    So the tensioner meters oil by how far it's extended? Even if I rotated the balance shaft bearings to close off the holes I'm still screwed?

    You can rotate the bearings and that will help with the leaks associated with the shafts. The tensioner is not intended to run that extended, and although it's not been observed under running conditions, it's a logical point of failure and leakage.

    You've been through a lot with this engine. Would hate to see the tensioner become an issue so I would reccomend taking care of it preemptively.

    First I've heard of the tensioner being a point of failure. As far as I know, the oil squirter part of the tensioner assembly is completely separate from the spring loaded part.

    edit:
    Reading more about this, the 3RZ tensioner used the oil pressure to create the tension- the 2TR seems spring loaded

    Can you explain this post, is this the same friend?
    His chain was deleted at this point? Was it oil starved before the chain delete?

    I sent him the balance shaft delete after this point. He was at his wits end with blowing up motors.

    He had taken the chain off and left everything else alone.

    Where did you get the info that the 2tr balance shaft tensioner is a different construction? This would be the first I have heard of that

    Ahh so he blew that one up, you sent the kit and he hasn't blown one up since?
    I have no experience with 3RZ tensioners, but read how it uses oil. I've held the 2TR ones and they operate well without oil pressure, I was inferring.

    I think I'm going to pump the brakes and install the kit anyways, you've at least made me paranoid and I'm not going to have any questions in my mind when I turn it over for the first time.
