Checked it out-looks like an awesome program but seems they only cover later selected platforms. Very cool that the later Tacomas are one of them

Lately, I've been wondering how an STI turbo would do on the 2TR. The stock turbo in my WRX is a Garrett MGT2259S.

You would run out of turbo real quick. I would think it would do good for slow speed crawling. Boost super early

Ive gotta decide if I want to use the CX hotparts kit or if I want to make my own, from there its just a matter of coming up with the charge pipes. All else is in place really. I would say the change over will happen late summer/fall. I just finished the current setup, and I kinda feel bad for it...............so I will give it a little time to play.

I would love to try an evoIII 16g on the truck, its one of the most well rounded/balanced turbos Ive used on a 2.0 for all around awesomeness (fast spool/while still delivering). I can make a repeatable 425HP with one and they spool hella quick. Its DSM framed of coarse, so would require a flange that is not open T3, which is a negative to me, so I will likely never try it, although I do have andaptor for T3 to DSM.

On the Holset- This thing can support over 60lbs a minute (600hp), has the common great flowing very universal open T3 turbine housing, when oiled right -an indestructible CHRA, an anti surge compressor cover which can be clocked in any orientation, vband compressor outlet, can easily go internal or external WG, and can be had for under $250 all day if you know how to look for them.

I see no reason to go spending big coin on anything when there are options like this out there. This thing will hurt feelings.

However- proper oil feed and return is absolutely imperative to the success of the Holset units.......or any turbo for that matter, but especially with these. The oil feed must be the correct pressure, achieved through the use of the proper restictor, no more, no less. This is not something to guess on or employ trial and error........every turbo has a spec for this that must be adhered to, some more forgiving than others, the Holsets will fail in under 1k if this is overlooked. The oil drain must be no smaller in diameter anywhere in its route to the pan than the size of the oil exit orifice on the CHRA (AN10), must not fight gravity at any point, and must be as straight and kink free as possible. These things are very simple but often turn out a costly and time consuming mistake that was overlooked from the start. Excessive crankcase pressure can impede on oil return as well so thats another thing to watch out for.......buts that a whole other large topic so I will leave it at that for now.....

I will keep you guys up to speed with what I round up for parts and will share whatever relevant info I can as the setup comes together.

This unit can support around 280HP, so I would not go that route, but it could work depending on goals, which should always be known before a turbo is selected. It would spool stupid fast but would just be "hot boost" deeper in the pull and would fall on its face up top.........its just too small.

Im sure its fun to zip around town with it mounted on the WRX, but once you get used to it you start craving more........which it just doesnt have.

The STI uses an IHI VF48 on a 2.5L, so it would be better suited to the 2TR. The VF48 spools around 3000-3500 RPM on the STI, so I would think that it would spool a hair faster with the extra displacement of the 2TR. They're supposed to be good for up to around 325 hp on the STI. However, from what I can find there are no official flow maps anywhere online.

I wouldn't think of putting the turbo from my 2.0L WRX on the 2TR. It's super responsive and makes for a great daily, but that tiny Garrett would be choking on the 2TR.

A GTX28 would be a good match, with plenty of overhead, for the 2TR.

No idea on the Holsets. Others do though.

I've been mainly considering BW turbos. Mostly because they have that really nice calculator. I need to build a spreadsheet to do calculations for plotting onto other maps.

Were I a 2tr owner, I would get a Borg Warner EFR, for that as well. Aside from the spool and flow per size benefits, the packaging is phenomenal.

Is there a certain location where you guys all agree the MAF belongs when going turbo? Im pretty sure I know the answer from reading other threads here but wanted to see what the answer was when the question came up in 2019.

I know there was some question about it in the early goings but figured its well known at this point.
