Picked up the truck about a month ago with a bad motor, previous owner said cylinder 4 was like 10psi, motor does still start and run, but very rough obviously.

I got the idea of boosting it, and came here. It's the current motor, and I'd like to get the truck going and usable, but I also only want to "buy once, cry once" if I'm going to go turbo. However, I haven't pulled the motor yet, so I'm not even sure if the motor is free of serious damage.

I may go the "buy a second and swap in, build slowly" route, but obviously that's more funds.

Well if you're going to boost it, and rebuild it, then contact www.lceperformance.com. Get some forged pistons, since you'll already be in there.

Yeah, that's what I had planned on doing, as well as the balance shaft delete, etc. while I'm at it, but more-so looking for feedback on if anybody has had theirs rebuilt and what it cost them.

Also looking for feedback on if anybody has run that level of power in the woods and if it made the truck unusable or if they loved it.

That's really going to depend on each persons driving style/suspension and gearing setup. Modern rigs with v8's are pushing close to that already, so I'd say it's definitely usable. It's also going to depend on what size turbo you're running and how much lag you have or lack thereof. Tons of variables that will essentially boil down to "your mileage may vary"

Totally understandable. Part of me just wants to put a V8 in it and call it good, but everybody does that. Final goal of truck has yet to be decided, but it will likely end up with quality suspension of some kind (fox, king, ads, etc.) and may even end up with an LT up front.

But, I do know that I want moar powa' baby

That isn't a bad price at all, considering I'm out to power that the 3rz and 2tr can handle.

Yeah, it's the machining work that I don't know the price of yet, and I'm slightly apprehensive of. But I'm assembling mine myself so hopefully I save some pennies there.

    You're out to power? Huh?

Blasted talk-to-text ruined what I was trying to state. Lol.

Edit, the amount of power that they can handle.

    Haha autocorrects son strikes again!

I've seen folks speculate that the 2tr can make and possibly hold 600hp without being billet everything. My goal is to eventually get the truck up to about 400ish whp, But starting small at 200-250.

That being said, what are people putting behind them for a trans/drivetrain? I'm sure 600hp would absolutely grenade the stock trans & rear-end on a stock Taco

There's a couple good posts and threads on here about the stock trans holding power, especially the automatic a340 that's also in the Supra. Apparently with a shift kit and 2800 stall converter it's pretty stout

Not bad prices as long as the work is solid.

If you dont wanna cry later, get forged pistons. You will need to let your engine warm up longer than if you have hypereutectic pistons, but theyll be ready to take a boost beating. Get new forged rods too. Stock crank is able to hold all the power you can ever want.

If theyre going into the head, look at getting hardened valve seats and valves with double valve springs. The stock springs are whack and will float when you start revving out under boost.

Also be prepared to get a piggyback ECU to control the engine. Stock ECU will have limitations if your goal is 400hp

If it is a dirt truck with power, will most likely need a built trans and rear end. Street can handle more power for easy stuff like pulls and hitting the canyons.

I've done some technical rock crawling in mine and think the turbo is a big plus. I'm only running 4.5psi. The engine doesn't stall as easily and with the high loads boost builds pretty quickly. I'm sure with a boost controller you could smooth things out if youre running high pressure. The stock ecu is terrible for boost in the sub 4500rpm range on mine.
