Im also curious which would be best once building the motor. I know a standalone is gonna be the best way to get the most out of aftermarket upgrades. Im considering a haltech as well

You'll be fine. Get that thing wired up and enjoy some boost. Dont need a update if it works right?

Haltech has great support from what I've heard/seen, you just gotta pay to play.
@OVTune was working on unlocking and releasing the software to tune our factory ECU's but I haven't heard anything on it since... December?

I was just concerned as operating systems advance the software may not work anymore, but I anticipated if I could get it tuned right then you said it, no need to re-tune in the future :)

Haltech is pretty outstanding with the Tech support.

OvTune has made more recent posts about it. I think they posted in the 2TR thread, by @BassAckwards .

I am really curious what yours ends up making. With your build engine, you've plenty of room to push the envelope!

I know what you mean. Maybe you end up keeping a "current/soon to be older" computer for tuning needs and buy the latest box when it comes out.

Its kinda like the Split Second (Urd 7th) software. I remember that stuff from almost 20 years ago and they are still using it. I think you will be able to get your money's worth out of the Fic.

Haven't heard any issues with them. You should be just fine. If something new comes out I'm sure it will cost more and have more features.

Just got off the phone with LCE, their tech department specifically. Nothing in the works they're aware of for cams, but the gentleman I spoke with is going to do some digging and get back to me. He also said they get their gaskets from Cometic, and they haven't given them any mls head gaskets yet for the 2tr. So I think I'll place a call over there to find out. He also said they mainly focus on supercharged builds, so not sure how much I'll be able to do with turbo with them.

Stock 2TR head gaskets are MLS. I went with Fel-pro, they have race tech gaskets available

Interesting, the one I pulled out of this engine didn't seem like one... then again it may have just been that F'ed.

Just got a call back from Brian (I think?) at LCE, he gave me the rundown on @MrCrowntown's engine, and apparently I'm going way more into mine than his. He did say they did 1mil over valves on his head, which aren't on the website yet. He said he would be updating that and getting them on there in the next week, give or take.
I definitely think I'll be doing those, as the ones in the head currently are coated in aluminum from that piston melting. Along with some porting and polishing for a good time. :bananadance:

You could probably email with Kelford for cams. They seem to be the go to place for toyota cams.

Thanks for the idea, just sent them an email. They have cams for the 3rz, but nothing yet advertised for the 2tr. Or any valve springs for the 2tr either.

My pleasure. I'm all for engine swaps and crazy ideas, but the more I've read and learned about this engine, the more I want to build it up. It seems like a solid performer, with great potential. I'm honestly thinking with everything I'm looking at doing, I could be building a 600hp+ engine, I just don't have the fuel up here to really go too nuts. It's hard finding 91 up here, never mind 93 or E85. That stuff is almost nonexistent.
