They really are! I’m still debating on running catted or decatted. I’m still waiting on the install manual from Matt. Also no tune file yet.

Crack(s). It looked flat with the ‘straight edge’ angle iron I found in the garage. I got a second shade tree mechanic opinion and we concluded it should be OK. Looked like a casting flaw really.

I would have to plan this out. I’m still trying to get everything situated. I could probably do the install in one weekend, including gauges and such. But tuning wise, I’m not sure how quick the turn around would be. This is my daily and hopefully I get a base file at least.

@mZiggy how long did it take for Matt to send the first file to you?

I had my tune in my email within a couple days, but I highly recommend not starting until you have a tune file in hand, unless you're comfortable with your truck being down for an extended period of time. Potentially. Other people were not anywhere close to as lucky as I was.

There's even a dude who installed and uninstalled the kit and is looking to sell it I believe because the truck sat for months with the full kit installed, but no tune file.

Posting in the VFT Turbo thread might not be a bad idea to hopefully get the ball rolling.

Yea I tagged Matt. Maybe he’s busy with VFT 1.4 rollout. I’m not in a rush. I waited over 1.5 years LOL.

Welp, I noticed a weird little bubble on start ups that seems to go away after warm up. Still rips too. Did a comp test and 1 and 3 are down 50 and 30 psi. Leak Down says intake valves. So off with her head!

4 birds with 1 stone on this one. Needed to do timing belt any way so perfect time. I'm going to send the hot parts off to get ceramic coated. I'll put NA manifold back on and get some Maf voltage numbers so I can make a Maf clamp table. Also swap the head.

    Got started today removing parts.20210827_094833.jpg 20210827_145654.jpg 20210827_135936.jpg

Glad that it is looking valve related and not something worse. Still one of the cleanest 5vz turbo kits in my mind.

Mat's an amazing tuner, no doubt.

But he takes on too much by himself, too many simultaneous projects, and when he figures out something better for tune tweaks I think he jumps down the rabbit hole seeking further perfection. Over and over. Resulting in long lead times even when he had less projects pulling him in all sorts of directions.

    The saga continues..

Head is off. Found something soft wedged into the intake valve on #1. Also seems to be a crack on #3. Not going to fuss with it right now, just moving forward with cleaning and assembly.

What is the soft material? Any conclusion?

Hard to tell throught the photo if that is a crack or just carbon build up. Obviously you can tell best.

I'm not sure, at first I thought it was aluminum and I was like Wtf! I was still shocked either way, you get what I mean. Idk seems like rtv or something, but I haven't used any.
The other cylinder could be carbon, there definitely is some, but not too bad for 235k miles. I'll investigate more once I have more time.

Made some more progress today. The "new" head is on, cams are in and valve cover back on. I had a nice clean valve cover but the gasket kit didn't come with spark plug tube seals, so I re used the old valve cover. Folded over some wiring and got 2 of 3 intake manifold parts on. I have a 02 upper intake hiding somewhere that is super clean and has 1 less vacuum nipple on it. Just gotta dig it out. I originally wasn't going to use it, but now seems like a good time to clean the Iacv, so on it goes.

Next is timing belt, button up, then make NA Y pipe and see how she runs.
