Cali octane and I wanted the safety of lower compression ratios seeing as I will be learning tuning on this motor some. Also the motor should be good for over 30 psi so I didn't want a higher compression ratio. I had options from anywhere between 12:1 to 8:1 compression and I chose the very low side. Perhaps I chose wrong but for now, I am happy with my choice. Money for a turbo will be in a while seeing as I am planning on doing the ecu and building a head for the motor first. I have seen 650 hp on the stock 4agze block (8.1:1), so I am fairly sure I will be good with what I have planned. If it doesnt build boost till 5k then so be it. I will still have 4k till redline.

Your guys' 91 octane is so bad they included a whole chapter in my BMW tuning guidebook on how to combat it. The moral was to treat your timing table like it was 89 haha

Gotcha. I put 8.5:1 in my 1.8t Jetta motor and was hit with a barrage of armchair tuners saying I made a mistake. 30psi is 30psi but after running it through some online calculators it is a significant difference. Still hauled ass and still smoked pony cars. So I was happy. Next project is a 1.8t Audi B6 Quattro Avant and will get some 9.5:1 this time.

9000rpm is a nice ceiling. A good budget offering would be what I put on mine. It’ll spool up to 30 at 2900~RPMs and hold it to 7200 easily fed with 1.8 liters.

It’s a t3 flange. I actually have it laying in my garage right now as I robbed the VW head to put on the Audi.

Yeah, wasn't trying to say anything by saying 30psi as it isn't like superchargers. 30 from a small turbo is very different to 30 from a big turbo. Also heat is a big problem with the motors as you can't just run an easy air to air intercooler. Maybe I lose a bunch of rpm in spool and hp as well, when I pull this apart to rebuild and check things over, I might look into higher compression then, but for now it is what it is.

Anyone got thoughts on getting an obd1 car through smog on a standalone? (Not that I encourage anyone to do so or will do myself...) From what I have read it's only the check engine light turning off when they start the car and tailpipe emissions, yeah? (Sould be possible as it will differ from stock at first only by a lower compression ratio.)

Not the same motor, but I followed a guy that had a 4agte. Put a gt35 on it. Nasty hwy pulls in that corolla.

But it is done. As long as the welds hold, it doesn't really matter. Not long now before you can install it. Is yours T3 or T25?

Yeah i put quite a few beads on each joint, so she should hold up. I back purged it as well. It is a t3 flange mount.

I did the same on the manifold that I made for the Desert PreRunner. Double passes on most everything. Lots of rod. Pretty sure I used 1/8 filler. What size did you use?

Got some flanges on the way. T3 and T4. Then need to drill out the jig plates for the flanges. Simultaneously, I have been working on cutting the tubes for the merge, for @BassAckwards 's.

Going to be making one for him and one for my neighbor, before making those for the rest of the guys on here that are interested.

I used 1/16th rod for the first passes, i tried 3/32 at first but it kept cooling the weld pool down too fast at the amperage i was running. Second hot passes i used 3/32 bumped up the amperage too.

To the flanges i turned her up real hot and only had 3/32 309l but she worked good.
I bought pre cut/welded merges from i think cr racing. They were ok, poor penetration and schedule 10 but ace race parts were out of merges.

Ace Race uses Vibrant performance merges. They have quite a few "out of stock," unfortunately.

    Your plan was good.

Yeah they told me they were going to be out of merges for at least 6 weeks and that was a couple weeks ago. Supply chain issues are far and wide it seems

I wanted a horizontal band saw. Just don't have the room in my garage. Chop saw with a diamond blade is what I have for the time being.
