What are the symptoms of not running a restrictor fitting on a journal bearing turbo?

Blue smoke? Possibly oil in intake mani.

Looks like it was a few issues. I thought the -4 oil adapter had a restrictor in it, it does not. Second issue, I needed to rotate the oil feed and drain closer to 12 and 6 o’clock. I don’t think it was draining correctly and oil was seeping past the seals into the exhaust. I corrected that and ordered a .065 restrictor for the feed line. Fingers crossed that fixes the smoke show I had earlier ha ha. FFBBB63E-4E4C-49A8-AA72-474786DD99B1.jpg

I have a journal bearing turbo. I'm going to try it with out the restrictor and see how it fares. I saw the motion raceworks videos. That is how I figured out my issue with the oil in and outlet orientations. I did adjust my PCV hoses before this occurred.

What size oil drain fittings are you using? Also, which brand? Answers to this may actually be the root cause.

10AN for the drain back to the pan. If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to rework that and at least upsize to 12AN.
I wish I would have seen the Motion Raceworks videos sooner rather than yesterday.

Just because it's 10AN, doesn't mean it's actually 10AN all the way through.

    Amen to this right here^^^

I was watching a Boosted Lifestyle YouTube video. The guy was having a smoking problem from his turbo. He was using some cheap no-name Amazon AN fittings. Come to find out, his "-12 AN" was more like a -10 AN by internal measurements. He compared the cheap fittings to the nice fittings. Lesson learned for him.

Tried it again this evening. Looks like I need to redo the drain completely. The restrictor may help but might as well do it right the second time.

Redo the drain first. Journal bearing turbos need lots of oil.

There is some room to open up the cheap fittings. .475” to .575”

I’ll use this for a contingency if I can’t get the fittings I need in time for next weekend.

Treadstone manifold finally arrived after 6 months... Was about to cancel my order. Hoping to get the rest of the pieces to make a new down pipe and have it installed this weekend. 20220928_175256.jpg

Upgraded my intercooler pump also. The old one failed. There wasn't any info on the gpm the old one put out but judging by the size the new pump should flow quite a bit more. 20220917_120444.jpg

Wow. I guess they made it to order?

Either way, I am curious how you feel it performs.

Oh, wow. I was looking at those and saw they were out of stock. May place myself an order then after I see your fitment.

Should be decent to good performance.

Quite a few people ran those in the past. They are good and you can make really good power. Kurt over at CT forums made over 500whp on e85 with his.
I was hoping to run one, but it shoved my turbo into my 10" coilover.

Does this mani take up more space than other alternatives?
I would think a custom tubular one like the one mentioned before would be better for power?

Like @MadTaco461 said, it is more about where it places the turbo. Not so much the size, in this case.
