Putting in some work on this contraption.

 

Negative, especially with front end noises. Lots of other life things going on so truck gets back burner. It'll happen soon enough though.

New manifold looks cool!

 

I hear that! The older we get, time goes by much more quickly.

 

I was able to swap the .82 on today. Definitely noticed more response right off the bat.

Here is a quick pull in 3rd with the 1.03.


Then here is the .82 with a similar run.


You can see it makes peak psi sooner since the trace line is lower on the rpm axis. What you can't see is how quick it makes 6 psi since there are no rows there. It also faded boost a hair after peak psi, I'm wondering if the extra back pressure is pushing the gate open. Or just a fluke.

Either way, happy with it!

 

At least 500 rpms sooner. Already at 8 by 3k rpms. That thing picks up much more quickly!

 

Are you using a 3-port or 4-port boost solenoid? Mine has been really good about getting to and staying at target at 11psi but I don't think it would be able to hold the gate shut without pressure to the top.

 

It's the 3 port. Using it on the bottom port to bleed signal. I know I could go to top port and get a little more, just wanted back to back results with only one variable. I'm not using closed loop control yet, I know that will work well to hold a certain number.

 

Figured I would keep playing and switched to using the Top port boost control style.

Used the same settings to start but knowing I would have to change them.

Very spooly and over shot.
I kept pulling gain and it kept doing the same thing basically. Started to think I hooked it up wrong. Then I zeroed to map to see if that helped.


Much slower spool and settled out at 8 psi. I'll goof with gain and see what I can dial in for spool.

 

Learning process for sure. I had the similar issue setting up my boost controller on the Haltech. Kept over boosting, and boost cut safety would kick in. Ugh. Did not like that feeling.

Question on 2GR-FKS tuning... In stock form, the Atkinson cycle is only active at low to mid RPM under light load. Is anyone tuning these where Atkinson is active under high load to reduce compression?

 

Good question. On the little VW/Audi 1.8t inline4 the VVt is solely used on cold start to help heat cat and overall lower emissions. It is purely a variable cam timing where a solenoid adds or removes timing between the intake/exhaust cams. Doesn’t not add open/close durations. Eventually tuners figured out how to harness some use from this and noted earlier spoolup/onset boost RPMs. Shorten the intake and lengthen the exhaust to get less recirculated gasses and more compression while sending more gasses through the turbo to get more spool. More gas, more air, for more power…but only minimal.

 

All done!

 

I was thinking less about getting the turbo to spool quicker and more about reducing the 11.8:1 compression.

 

Why would you want lower compression? Are there any thicker head gaskets out there for the 2gr specifically for lowering compression? Looks like Cometic offers a .051” and a .027” for the 2gr. Don’t know how big a difference or what yours even has. Being its got truck duty it is likely the .027”.

Yes sir. Made this one to place the turbo exactly where it used to sit with the older manifold.

curious on folks' boosted MPGs.

I'm running 10 psi with a SC 3rz 4cyl w/ Haltech management on shitty 91 octane Cali gas. 4.88 gears on 35's and getting like 230 or so per tank at best highway only. About 12 mpg at best.
Worst with combined city driving and about 7mpg on the trail

 

Speedometer is calibrated?
