I ordered a new PTP turbo blanket after setting my other one on fire


The new one might not look as sweet but I think this one should be easier to take on and off without destroying itself and shouldn't need gloves to touch it without feeling like there's fiberglass slivers in my hands


I think it'll also be less likely to absorb oil like the 1st one

 

Where was all the oil coming from?

 

Pretty sure it's the turbo drain fitting I built

 

Its hard to tell exactly because air from the fan blows it around and then there's the oil catch can that likes to add oil to the same area

 

Figure I'd drop some pics of the 2RZ a buddy and I are building for his pickup, there's been some scope creep, turbo comes in tomorrow. It started as "just freshen up the gaskets and slap a turbo and haltech on". Well now we are building a harness, it got a TIG welded stainless manifold, ARP studs, cometic head gasket, fresh oil pump, sent the head out for a valve job, it's a whole thing lol.

Should be taking delivery of an HX35 with 8cm turbine housing for my 1.8t Audi project today. Really looking forward (excited) to see how it works out.

Yeah should be a good time, doing most of the assembly this afternoon, only thing that hasn't arrived yet is the oil pan since this is going in a solid axle swapped pickup.

I haven't tried a brushless fan yet but I've been using Bosch PWM controllers on brushed fans to get infinite variability and soft start, the Haltech controls them easily and they can be found in tons of cars at the junkyard. Got a pile of the controllers from E46s, Fords, Chrysler/Fiat, and the occasional Mercedes.

Got the hx35 8cm in my car before dark yesterday. Made a full pulls on the highway nearby and it’s definitely bigger. Full spool by 5500rpm but the onset takes a while. Nothing like the instant surge line on the Super30. 5psi by 3200, 10@3600, 15@4000, 20@4500, 25@4900, and 28(capped)@5400.

This has a twin scroll turbine housing but I do not have a TS manifold and getting a proper one for these engines costs a pretty penny. There’s some out there but they’re old tech before people really understood the proper method to it. Gain 2-300 in spool characteristics. I did port match it to a single scroll gasket and took the edge off the split. Nothing crazy.

I will say it feels like it pulls harder with less boost. The reduction in backpressure I’m sure is exponentially lower as the loudness of the exhaust has risen significantly.

 

How high does your engine rev?

 

That's a good looking manifold. Love how close the turbo hugs the motor.

 

6500 starts redline. Many rev out to 7500 daily and stock springs suffice. High end springs can get upwards of 8000 reliably.

 

And here I am thinking 6200 in my Taco is high. Lol

 

I try to keep the car to 6000 normally. May rev out a bit more if need be. The Taco only sees 4500 to 5000 max.
