Hey guys, unfortunately no major updates. After getting the truck running I had to be responsible and focus on house projects :facepalm:which have not been fun….I have just been driving the truck naturally aspirated for now. Most all of my driving has been local, but last weekend I drove it to the desert to ride my dirt bike, 4 hours round trip and it did great aside from being a gas guzzler. The only issue I have is when I am going down a hill with my foot off the gas (does not happen all of the time) I will hear what sounds like a horrible rod knock, I blip the throttle a couple times and it goes away. The theory is due to the stiffer valve springs it harder for the VVTI sprocket to hold position. I have been told that the same thing happens on the 2JZ with VVTI. Torspd and Mike from MotoIQ have both suggested I run a thicker oil. So next oil change I am going to try Amsoil 15-50 and see how it behaves.

Always reminds me of the manifolds that have a hump in them. Keep the bend pointing down like 15*

We revisited the design and definitely going to do a little bit of work on the throttle end. Cut it flat, then give it a slight bend downwards to position it better, just like that intake

Update! Just need to make a throttle body flange and a lower intake flange, then decide where we want to put a vacuum block on it, and we will be good to go!

Great spot right on the sides, for a vacuum block/s.

Managed to get the throttle body flange made and welded on today! All that's left is the lower intake flange now! Then it will be time eventually to build a turbo manifold! Super excited for that!

totally off topic, but this thread is monitored by some very smart and helpful Tacoma people, so I am posting here, looking for help for another TW member with a problem that has me totally stumped.

'08 2nd gen Tacoma, 4.0, did an engine swap and upgraded fuel pump. Now the truck starts right up, but dies without any stumble or skip, after about 3-4 seconds. This reminded me of the Resistor for the fuel pump, so he checked that by jumper wiring the connector and no change. He also connected a fuel pressure gauge, and the pressure remains plenty steady, so it is not a drop in fuel pressure.

I once had a Chevy alternator go bad, and the truck had similar symptom except at WOT it would stay running, with snorting and bucking and miss-firing. The dash in that truck lit up when it died, sort of like when you turn on the ign, so that led me to suspect voltage drop. Turned out that if I disconnected all the wires to the alternator, the truck ran fine off the battery alone. The recently purchased re-man Alternator was shorting the electric system after start-up. This story did not help our friend either.

If you think you might help, Check out his post at https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ies-unless-revved.808512/page-2#post-30503230

    Thanks in advance!!

It's sold, when he gets the engine back together @Murphinator will be in good hands here

The old tow pig was pissing oil everywhere. Stuck in a tiny upgrade that isn't visible from the outside. Woke up the midrange nicely.

In the process of choosing a turbo for my new buggy build with a 3rz. I believe I'm going to go with a Pulsar T3 turbo. Seems pretty good for the money..

    My choice is between these 3: PSR3067 3071 3076

Mine is not a DD by any means, I need it to spool somewhat quickly. any suggestions?

There will be a fairly small spool difference between them, but they will be relatively similar. Only difference is the compressor side ability to flow. If you aren't going to outflow the 3067 compressor for power goals, that would be the best, as it will spool a tiny bit faster. If you wanna wait a day or two, I can tell you how the 3067 is on a 3rz

Had first start on the 3rz with all the changes last night and it went great. Hopefully today we can put it on the road and get some break in miles on it, and get the harness all loomed up

First drive on the pickup last night, and the 3rz has noticabley more torque at lower rpm, and even though we kept it to 6psi while breaking in the clutch and engine, it definitely feels more responsive and smoother in the boost curve. Still have to look over logs and get some stuff dialed with it(oil leak, iac is dead, and lots of tune tweaks) but it feels really good. The 3067/3071 is about the PERFECT street turbo for the 3rz imo.

I'd recommend the summit racing 44mm wastegate. I'm super impressed by it, made in USA, super consistent for me, and 100$. You should be loading down your setup more than me which will give you boost earlier. My super light load c 35's don't load the engine down much on 5.29's. should have even better boost response when I get 37's on. You will have plenty of low torque and plenty of higher rpm flow with either of those
