How many miles would you go before changing sparks on 3.4L turbo? Curious what you guys think.

Thx man! It's so beast I can't believe it. Bout to take her out for some jumps in the hills. I ran ik22s last time I changed. I think theyre iridium

From what I understand those iridiums should last quite a while even in a boosted application. 30-50k depending on how hard you're driving it. Maybe someone else can correct me if I'm wrong

    Also, vids of jumps please!

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
The 5VZ uses a wasted spark setup so it sparks twice per 4 strokes which halves the expected life of a regular spark plug. Therefore they recomend plugs with two grounds to 'double' the life.

If you are using single ground plugs, take the recomended miles for the plugs (should be on the box; if not check the manufacturer site) and halve it. The IK22's, IIRC are only 30k miles; so 15k for the 5vz. I know they are irridium, I don't know why they wear out so fast.

If you are using twin ground plugs, just run them the recomended miles.

If you put twin ground plugs into a none wasted spark engine (or upgrade your ECU and put coils on all plugs), you can double the recomended life of the twin ground plugs.

    Clear as mud?

Hold up. How the hell does twin ground plugs make them last longer. The electrode is still gonna wear down juat as fast regardless of how many grounds there are......

They both do. With a single ground plug, the spark only jumps from the top of the electrode and lands on one ground. With twin ground, the spark jumps from either side of the electrode so it wears out on both sides.

Hypothetically it doubles the life but I'm sure its not an exact science.

Btw, was looking up the IK22's and I believe the reason they don't last as long is due to the fact they run 'colder' and, unlike hotter plugs, can't burn off the carbon so they can get fouled. So you might be able to clean them and run them longer?

Interesting. Lots of tidbits on knowledge in here lately. Or just me being an idiot. Not sure yet.

With a twin ground plug below, the idea is the spark will jump to the closest ground, as that ground wears out, it will start jumping to the other, basically choosing the path of least resistance. Its possible that it can jump to both depending on the amount of power send by the coils, but generally speaking it will choose one side or the other. This should double the life compared to single ground. They are not common and basically designed for engines like the 5VZ.

When coil on plug was first developed, it was very expensive. So to get the performance without the costs, manufacturers only put coils on one bank of the engine with a wire to the other side. The two corresponding cylinders that shared a coil were in sync and the coil sparked every two strokes, on both cylinders (2 and 4 or compression and exhaust stroke).

Of course this halved the life of the spark plug so it wasn't too expensive to add a second ground to the plugs. Coils eventually became affordable enough to have then on all the cylinders so the age of the twin ground plugs was short lived.

Now there are some fancy pants multi ground plugs, primarily made by Bosh, that magically increase power, MPG, and penis size. Don't run those.

Anybody know anything about designing anti lag systems?

Just be aware that Anti-lag put a lot of wear and tear and heat into your turbo and exhaust, weve had a few guys melt the exhaust side of their turbo because it got too hot.

It's a timing retard that lets the fuel be ignited as the exhaust valve is open, creating a huge jump in manifold pressure to spin the turbo.
